First 5 Sacramento

Through the First 5 Sacramento Community Building Initiative (CBI) small groups of parents or caregivers of children ages 0 – 5 living in Sacramento County can apply for a mini-grant of up to $5,000. Groups should apply that have ideas for activities that bring people together within their community. The deadline to apply is Aug. 7, though, so now is the time to develop your ideas.

The CBI program is administered by First 5 Sacramento and aims to promote young children’s well-being and health. The program was started in 1998 under Proposition 10, and has invested over $98 million in these community-building programs and services.

The only requirements for a program that qualifies for a grant is that it benefits children ages five and under and focuses on building community relationships. Here are some groups that have received funding in the past (courtesy of www.first5sacramento.net):

  • Sacramento Mom’s Playgroup: A weekly dance along for parents and children ages 2-5
  • Neighborhood Reading Network: A group that hosted monthly “I Love Reading” days at parks and libraries
  • Elk Grove Mothers of Multiples: A group that brought parents of multiples (twins, triplets, etc.) together for play dates and socializing

The First 5 Sacramento CBI program asks that you contact them before applying for the grant so they can help you refine your idea. The CBI staff can be reached at (916) 876-5865. Once they have approved your idea, you are welcome to apply by 5 p.m. Aug 7 to be considered for up to $5,000 of grant funding. Visit online at www.first5sacramento.net for more information.

Two toddlers play on the dark sidewalk of an unlit road. The children are illuminated only by the stray beams of oncoming headlights. Next to them, a group of men are huddled together on the corner of the street, eyeing each car that turns on to their stretch of the road.
