Did you know that Northern California produces some of the highest level gymnasts in the country? Whether you’re an avid gymnastics fan, or are just feel the spirit of the Olympics, you’ll want to stop by Technique Gymnastics this weekend for the Golden State Gymnastics Meet.

The meet will be a gymnastics competition like you would see at the Olympics and some of the gymnasts are even of that caliber and will be performing at an elite level. Gymnasts from Utah, Arizona, and Nevada will join the California gymnasts at one of the greatest gymnastics facilities in the area, located in Rancho Cordova at 11345 Folsom Blvd.

There will be two full days of competition. The highest level gymnasts will be competing Saturday evening. These are the gymnasts who are vying for top spots on a national level. There will also be awards ceremonies for outgoing seniors. One such gymnast, Alicia Asturias has a full scholarship to UC Berkeley this fall. As this is her last home meet, there will be a presentation recognizing her accomplishments even though she is recovering from a surgery that will leave her on crutches for the event.

In this competition, only girls will be competing in four different events; vaults, bar, balance beam, and floor. The gymnasts will be giving this meet all they have as this is the last practice meet before the state qualifier. There will be 400 to 500 hundred gymnasts competing over the course of the weekend in four sessions, each is expected to last between 3 and 4 hours. Gymnasts as young as 8 years old will be competing on Sunday and the older gymnasts will be competing on Saturday. The meet begins at 8 a.m. and will end around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday and 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Ticket prices are only $10 per person. Children and seniors may purchase discounted tickets for $6. If you are interested in attending the event, please see the Technique Gymnastics website or call (916) 635-7900.

The crowd cheered for every single runner. Although rough winds were starting to rush in, the runners at the Holiday Run for the Youth by the Rancho Cordova Police Activities League were giving their best effort to cross the finish line.

Josh Gruver, a 17-year-old Cordova High School student won first place in the 5k run with a time of 17 minutes and 25 seconds. Anthony Enriquez, a 17-year-old from Sacramento took second, and Mitch Garrett from Galt placed third.

Anthony Fagundes from Fair Oaks took first place in the 10k run with a time of 35 minutes and 59 seconds. Second place was taken by Rancho Cordova resident Tony Giglini, 33 and third by Elk Grove resident Gary Campbell.

The PAL Holiday Run for the Youth was held at Village Green Park located near Zinfandel Drive. Participants took part in a 5k, 10k or 1.2 mile run/walk and a toy drive was also underway for less fortunate families in the area. Benefits will go to the Rancho Cordova Police Activities League, which offers free activities for the youth in Rancho Cordova.

The run drew about 616 registrations. Not all registered runners participated in the event, many blame the less than perfect weather, but the event was still a success drawing young teens to growing families to the event.

Local businesses donated food and drinks for the participants in the event.

Several runners said they joined the race as a way to help the community. Daynale George was one of them. She was the first woman to cross the finish line in the 10k run. “I thought this would be a nice way to help during the holidays for the youth,” George said. “It was a great run, I’m excited.”

The Cordova football team played host to Christian Brothers Friday night at Lancer Stadium. Even though the Falcons pulled off the lopsided victory, the game was full of action up until the very last second as the Lancers fought for and gained the respect of their opponents.

Michael Lindsey wasted no time in making his presence known by rushing for 51 yards on the very first play of the contest. Soon after, Reggie Langford hooked up with Deshawn Smith in the end zone and after a blocked PAT, the Lancers were on the board with a 6-0 lead.

After a few failed drives, the Falcons were able to put up some points of their own with a 12-yard rushing touchdown from Julian Winters and jumped ahead of Cordova 7-6.

With the Lancers now on offense, Langford was forced to rush a pass from a bad snap in shotgun formation and was picked off by Steven Neri. The Falcons took over on the Cordova 20-yard line but they were not able to capitalize on the interception and punted the ball away as the first quarter ended.

The second quarter got off to a bad start for the Lancers as Langford’s pass was intercepted by Corey Crowder for the Falcons. Christian Brothers quickly scored again with a 10-yard rushing touchdown from Aaron Byrd to put them up by a score of 14-6.

The Lancers had some trouble with their rushing attack at this point in the game as the Falcons consistently keyed in on Lindsey. Ever resilient, Cordova found another way to score by giving the ball to Langford who rushed in to the end zone on a 5-yard quarterback keeper. The Lancers were not able to secure the two-point conversion and still trailed the Falcons 12-14.

Christian Brother distanced themselves further from Cordova on the first play of the next drive with a 66-yard rushing touchdown from Corey Crowder. After an interception by Ade’ Jackson, the Falcons scored another touchdown via quarterback Michael Lahey, but the PAT was blocked by Cordova and Christian Brothers had to settle for a 27-12 lead going into the locker room.

The halftime show in the stadium was quite entertaining as the Cordova High School marching band, also known as “The Big Red Music Machine”, led the festivities honoring the graduating seniors.

With the teams back on the field, the third quarter belonged to the Falcons as they scored four unanswered touchdowns but missed two PAT kicks to put them ahead comfortably 53-12.

The fourth quarter began with the Cordova fans growing restless but this did not trickle down to the football team. In fact, quite the opposite happened as the Lancers refused to go down without a fight which made this easily the most entertaining quarter of the entire game.

Cordova decided to implement their quick offense in order to catch Christian Brothers off guard which resulted in a Lancer touchdown and successful 2-point conversion to inch them closer, 20-59. The Falcons continued to score and increase their lead over Cordova but that did not stop the Lancers from putting up a few more points of their own. In total, Cordova scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter as well as three 2-point conversions.

The player of the night award for this game goes to Adam Braithwaite. Adam led the defense with 12 solo tackles and also showed his versatility by switching to offense and scoring all three 2-point conversions in the fourth quarter.

Even though the Lancers eventually lost Friday night 36-72, the boys walked off the field with their heads held high and had grins from ear to ear because they knew that they put up a good fight. Sure, they could have done many things differently but overall they had fun out there on the field; and when it comes down to it, that’s all that really matters.

As an avid fan of Mixed Martial Arts, it is my duty to watch as many Ultimate Fighting Championship events as possible. However, that becomes difficult when the promotion is putting out at least one pay-per-view show every month at $50 a pop. So when I heard that our local Hooters restaurant would be playing the fight on their dozens of TV’s plastered inside the building, I was more than happy to stop by and check it out.

The crowd at Hooters on Saturday evening was surprisingly mixed with young men, women and even a few families. The establishment was packed with people and if you didn’t get there early, chances are you would be standing for the duration of the fight. Luckily, I only had to wait about twenty minutes and was able to score a table right as the first bout was starting at 7:00.

Hooters does offer reserved seating for their UFC events in case you don’t feel like taking your chances on getting a table. The cost is $10 per person with a four seat minimum; this is highly recommended as they are in a prime location and well worth the money. Also keep in mind that because of the low turnover rate in customers during the fights, Hooters does automatically add on an 18% gratuity charge per tag.

The loud, enthusiastic atmosphere at the restaurant throughout the night made for a very fun experience. Everyone seemed to be really into each of the fights but it was obvious who the crowd favorite was. Cain Velazquez garnered the most cheers from the masses at Hooters as he strolled to a TKO victory over Ben Rothwell mid-way through the second round in their co-headliner contest.

In the main event, Lyoto Machida successfully defended his Light Heavyweight (205 lbs.) title against Marcio “shogun” Rua with a controversial, Unanimous Decision victory. The patrons at the restaurant seemed split about the verdict of the fight as they yelled out mixtures of boos and cheers.

The food, service and environment blended together well at the Hooters in Rancho Cordova to make it an overall great place to watch a live UFC event.

Stop by next month on Saturday November 21st to see Brock Lesnar try and defend his Heavyweight crown against Shane Carwin. Fights start at 7:00 so get there early for a good seat.

Friday night’s homecoming game ended in disappointment for Cordova as the visiting Union Mine Diamondbacks snatched away the victory in the final minute of the fourth quarter.

Lancer Stadium was busting at the seams with fans and the roar from the crowd, band, and cheerleaders could be heard from down the street. After an awesome introduction, the football team was fired up and ready to charge on to the field.

Union Mine received the ball to start off the first quarter. The Cordova defense was strong and looked to send a message right away as #56 Jared Silva sacked the quarterback for a 4-yard loss in the opening drive. The Diamondbacks were passing a lot with mixed success but ran into trouble at the end of the quarter when #26 Darcy Regalda intercepted the ball for the Lancers.

With a switch in quarters and the ball now in Cordova’s hands, Michael Lindsey followed up his 38-yard rush from the last play in the first quarter, with a 2-yard rushing touchdown for the first score of the game.

Union Mine took their turn on offense and was gaining some decent rushing yards until they began to suffer from some self-inflicted mistakes. After back-to-back delay of game penalties, the Diamondbacks became frustrated at their inability to score in the Red Zone and called a timeout with 3:29 left in the quarter. Cordova’s brick wall defense prevented a Union Mine touchdown on the next play and the Diamondbacks were forced to turnover the ball at the 2-yard line.

With their back dangerously close to their own end zone, Reggie Langford handed the ball off to Michael Lindsey who dragged his team out of the trenches with a huge 61-yard rush. Two plays later, Lindsey was given the ball once again and scored a 9-yard rushing touchdown to put the Lancers up 14-0 at halftime.

Homecoming celebrations were especially colorful and entertaining. Each class paraded around their spirit walls that were modeled after different Disney movies; in attendance were Aladdin, Hercules, Peter Pan, and the various Toy Story characters. Mary-Thony Sohl was announced Queen and Cordova football’s very own Reggie Langford was crowned King.

Back on the field, the third quarter started off with tension high on both teams. Union Mine made a few mental errors with penalties and a fumble that they quickly recovered. Cordova also fell into the same trap as they were penalized twice in their first offensive drive. After the Lancers calmed down a bit they stated to move the ball down field and replaced Langford at the quarterback position with #6 Chris Lane in order to utilize Reggie as a receiver.

The Diamondbacks broke ground with their passing game and found gaps in the Lancer defense. As the seconds ran out in the third, #4 Cody Tow caught a 31-yard touchdown pass to put them on the board 14-7.

The final quarter was rough for the Lancers because they hurt themselves with unnecessary penalties and had trouble containing Union Mine’s offense. Midway through, #4 Cody Tow caught a 15-yard pop pass to tie the game at 14.

Just as Cordova was mounting a strong offensive campaign, Chris Lane’s pass that was intended for Reggie Langford was picked off by #3 Dan Schwarzberg who scored with :59 left in the game to put Union Mine up by a final score of 14-21.

Unfortunately, the Lancers were upset at their homecoming game but looked very good for most of the game. If they can keep it together for a full four quarters this team will give any opponent a hand full. Cordova hits the road again next Friday against Turlock with varsity starting at 7:30.

Cordova High School has been flooded this week by doctors, lawyers, Disney characters, Beatniks, flower children, disco divas, and all around “maniacs.” Homecoming is officially underway for the Lancers and the spirit days have given the students several opportunities to dress up and show their school pride.

Students and staff alike have been working diligently every day into the evening on decorations and floats for each of the classes. The theme, titled “Happiest Place on Earth” is centered on Disney characters and movies including: Peter Pan, Aladdin, Toy Story, and Hercules.

Activities Director Josh Creeger describes the scene as an “organized chaos” with each class working separately on their respective floats but still cooperating with one another by sharing materials and supplies.

The entire campus has been buzzing this week with activities and projects that will culminate Friday night at the football game against Union Mine. At halftime of the game, the winners of the float contest will be announced along with the winning King and Queens candidates.

Homecoming fever has not been quarantined to just the high school. As part of their activities on Monday, a group of Cordova students held a mock rally at Mills Middle School. According to ASB President Danni Hirschler, “we do this so that we can give the seventh and eighth graders a preview of what they can look forward to at the next level.”

The finalized floats will be on display at Lancer Stadium next to the scoreboard prior to the game, so come out and take a look at the students’ hard work. Varsity starts at 7:30 but it should be a packed house so get there early to grab a good seat and cheer the Lancers to victory over the Diamondbacks!

The Cordova Lancers volleyball team took on the visiting Vista del Lago Eagles Tuesday night in a make-up game from last week that was canceled due to the extreme weather. Cordova had a rough night as they lost in three games to Vista.

At the start of the match, the Lancers seemed to be slightly distracted and out of tune which could be due to the festivities from Homecoming week. Vista took advantage of the situation and began to capitalize on the small mistakes that Cordova was making. The Lancers trailed for most of the game but finally snapped out of their funk towards the end of the first game to stage a comeback. However, it just wasn’t enough and the Eagles squeaked by with a 23-25 win.

In the second game, Vista seemed to always be at the right place at the right time. They exploited holes in the Cordova formation and put points on the board quickly. The Lancers continued to struggle and began to make some fundamental errors that they usually have no problems with. Try as they might, Cordova couldn’t hold off Vista and fell 15-25.

Cordova showed improvement in the third game but had a hard time building up their momentum. Every time they would gain some confidence by scoring points, Vista would find some way to shut it down and jump ahead for the eventual 11-25 win.

Tuesday’s game was less about Vista’s abilities to find a way to win and more about Cordova’s inability to pull it together mentally. The Lancers are easily a more athletic, talented team than the Eagles but in order for them to string together some more wins before the end of the season, they need to recognize that they have these abilities and show it on the court.

Cordova continues Sierra Valley League action next Tuesday October 27th on the road against Union Mine.

The Cordova varsity volleyball team lost to Ponderosa in three games this Thursday at the Lancer gym but the lady Lancers made the Bruins dig down deep and struggle for every point in the highly competitive match.

As the two teams took to the court it was obvious that the Ponderosa team would be a hand-full as each of the Bruins towered over the Lancers. However, as the first game began to unfold, it became just as obvious that Cordova would not go down with out a fight.

Ponderosa jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead in the first game but Cordova battled back hard to score six unanswered points and tie it up. After some more back and forth action, the Lancers slowly began to take the lead and at one point, lead 13-16. Ponderosa became frustrated with their inability to put Cordova away swiftly and were forced to take a time out to compose themselves. Whatever they did, it worked because the Bruins rallied back for the win, 25-22.

Spirits were high on the Cordova bench as the players and coaches were content with their performance in the first game and knew that they could keep pace with the Bruins.

Ponderosa came out swinging for the fences in the second game in an attempt to put Cordova away early. The Lancers struggled a little bit with the height and power of the Ponderosa outside hitters but still managed to remain competitive in a 25-14 loss.

Game three was low scoring in the beginning but that was due to the high intensity of the volleying between the teams. Ponderosa was getting the better of the exchanges and eventually overtook the Lancers again, 25-14 to seal the victory.

Cordova was gracious in defeat and most of the players were able to muster up a smile and hold their heads high while walking off the court. Coach Muse was satisfied with her team’s performance and said that the girls “have been working hard to play their positions correctly.” She credits #13 Christy Brown and #14 Amanda Compton as the standout Lancer players for the game: “their digs, serving, and quick movement has greatly improved” according to Muse.

As the Lancers near the end of the 2009 season they hit the road for the next two weeks against Galt and Union Mine. Thursday the 29th marks their last home match of the season so come out, fill up the stands and support your Cordova High Lancers.

With combined 40-plus years of competition and coaching experience, owners Scott Morris and Todd Sleizer bring a valuable resource to the city of Rancho Cordova.

Located at 11335B Folsom Blvd, the Swimstitute building houses a large 4,800 sq. ft. pool where ASCA certified instructors offer a variety of services ranging from beginning swim lessons and advanced stroke work to water aerobics classes and even scuba diving lessons. The indoor, heated pool allows for members to enjoy these services year round.

After realizing that there was a lack of quality swimming related services in the area, local enthusiasts and fellow swim coaches Scott and Todd took over the business in January of this year and have completely revamped it by adding instructors, classes, and quality equipment. Since then, the two have made it their mission to share their love of the sport and continue to make an impact on the community through coaching.

Putting a unique twist on aquatic activities, the Swimstitute will soon be offering a log rolling program that is the first of its kind in the state. With the help of national log rolling champions Shane Martin and Jaime Fischer, the institute will host a kick-off event in February 2010.

So whether you’re looking for a little extra help with your backstroke or if you just want to break the monotony of a traditional gym and find a fun way to get some exercise, the Swimstitute has what you’re looking for. Stop by their facility and sign up for a class or check out the website for more details. Don’t be afraid to get your feet wet!

The Cordova Lancers football team tried to stretch their winning streak to three this Friday night but were upset by the Vista del Lago Eagles 41-23.

Lancer Stadium was buzzing with excitement while the team rushed onto the field as they were given a roaring introduction by the Cordova marching band and cheerleading squads.

Vista drew first blood in the opening quarter with a 10-yard rushing touchdown by #28 Trey Hairabedian. After a missed PAT attempt the Eagles lead early in the game 6-0. Cordova answered back quickly with an impressive drive down field that ended with a 10-yard rushing touchdown of their own by #4 Michael Lindsey and after a successful PAT, the Lancers would enjoy their only lead of the game 6-7.

Just when Cordova looked to be gaining some ground on Vista, the Eagles stepped it up a notch and scored another rushing touchdown to end the first quarter. Vista tried to vindicate their earlier missed PAT by attempting a 2-point conversion but they were unsuccessful and had to settle for a 12-7 lead.

Second quarter action started off with some jovial antics in the Cordova stands as the cheerleaders and band simultaneously entertained the crowd with a unique rendition of “Rolling on the River:” the cheerleaders sang and danced while the band provided the music.

Back on the field, the two teams continued to battle it out, but the Lancers missed a few key opportunities to rack up some points via touchdown and instead settled for a 25-yard field goal by #3 Nick Smith making it a 12-10 game.

With only 3:40 left in the second quarter, Vista dealt a fatal blow to the Lancers by scoring two unanswered touchdowns. The first came as the Eagles blasted their way down field and #28 Hairabedian scored yet another rushing touchdown. The Eagles continued their unsuccessful string of failed 2-point conversions making the score 18-10. Cordova took possession of the ball but Vista soon took it back with an interception by #34 Ash Anayah and after just one offensive play, the Eagles found the end zone once again. Vista finally found their PAT groove; ending the half with a 25-10 lead and sending the Lancers into their locker room frustrated.

Cordova kicked the ball off to start the third quarter and did their best to keep Vista out of their end zone. The Eagles were not able to cross the goal line but did manage to score 3 points from a 34-yard field goal, putting them up 28-10

The remainder of the quarter, and game for that matter, followed the same pattern. Cordova had a hard time getting their offense going because of a lack of blocking and communication between players. The Lancer defense had some success in their pass coverage and pressure from the line but ultimately could not stop the Eagles’ rushing game.

Cordova mustered up a strong campaign in the fourth quarter in an attempt to close the gap on the score board but it was too little, too late. #5 Reggie Langford rushed for a 43-yard touchdown late in the quarter but a botched 2-point attempt left the Lancers unsatisfied. After a change in quarterback from Reggie Langford to Chris Lane, Cordova found the end zone one last time to score their 23rd and final point of the game. On the last kick-off of the game, Cordova performed an onside-kick and recovered their own ball. With a last ditch effort to put up another score, Chris Lane took to the sky to find a Lancer receiver but instead found an Eagle defender who intercepted the ball.

The Lancers put up a good fight and looked to be improving in some aspects but still have some work to do if they are to be competitive for the rest of the season. Cordova falls to 1-1 in league play and 2-3 overall. Next week, the team goes back on the road as they take on Oak Ridge in El Dorado Hills, Varsity action begins at 7:15.

The Cordova High football team racked up another win Friday night against the Ponderosa Bruins who are the reigning Sierra Valley League co-champions. Now with an even .500 record, the Lancers are looking to make some noise in the race for the 2009 SVL crown.

Cordova wasted no time in taking in to the Bruins as they scored two touchdowns in the first quarter. The Lancer offense played smart, conservative football throughout the game which ultimately made the difference between winning and losing.

While the offense deserves credit for putting most of the points on the board, the defense also deserves just as much recognition and praise. Adam Braithwaite led the way for the Lancers as he tallied up multiple tackles. At one point, Braithwaite was so menacing that he knocked the Ponderosa quarterback unconscious and caused him to leave the game.

Another Lancer defensive player who stood out Friday night was Paul Kolosey who scored Cordova’s third touchdown via interception.

Coach Perry Mansch was extremely happy with the way his boys performed but in true coaching fashion, admitted that there is still room for improvement. “We left points out there on the field” Mansch said, “it would’ve been nice to score a few more touchdowns to give us some breathing room.”

Cordova returns to the gridiron this Friday against Vista del Lago at Lancer Stadium. As usual, varsity starts at 7:30. It should be a packed house so get your seats early and make some noise along side the Cordova High Marching Band! Hope to see you there.

The Cordova Lancer football team earned their first win of the 2009 season Friday night with a dominant performance over the Florin Panthers.

Florin struck fast in the first quarter with a passing touchdown but Cordova quickly answered back with a score of their own from #4 Michael Lindsey to tie the game at 7 points a piece. After a few unsuccessful exchanges, the Lancers once again found the end zone with another rushing touchdown from Lindsey. With 2:24 left in the quarter Cordova was up 14-7. However, the Lancers’ lead would be short lived as Florin returned the kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown to again tie the game.

Cordova pulled ahead early in the second quarter as #5 Reggie Langford scored with a quarterback sneak on the second play of the drive. The Lancer defense took the field but would not be there long because they forced a fumble in which #51 Adam Braithwaite recovered.

Now back on offensive, the Lancers decided to use one of their other weapons in #20 Chris Grijalva who found the end zone with his feet putting Cordova up 28-14. The rest of the quarter went much of the same way with Cordova continuing to do as they pleased on offense. Lindsey racked up another rushing touchdown as did Langford who ran for 80 yards on a single carry. The Lancers ended the half with a comfortable lead over the Panthers 42-14.

The second half of the game was fairly lackluster. Cordova strayed from the game plan a little by trying to find the end zone too quickly which proved to be unsuccessful. The only significant action in the third quarter came from Florin who scored a 20-yard touchdown followed up by a two-point conversion making the score 42-22.

During the fourth quarter Cordova played smart by maintaining their lead and not taking too many risks. The ball went back and forth between the teams but very little progression was made by either side. That is until Michael Lindsey was given the nod once again and scored a 30-yard touchdown late in the game putting the Lancers up 49-22, which was the final score of the game.

The Lancers were very excited to get the win but also acknowledged that if they wanted to continue in their winning ways, they would have to keep up the hard work. Reggie Langford said that they have to “build on their new confidence” for next week’s opponent and “come into their first league game strong to send a message to the other teams that we mean business.”

Cordova plays Ponderosa next week on the road with Varsity action starting at 7:15. Get there early to watch the Lancers fight it out for their second consecutive win; good luck boys.

The Cordova Lancer volleyball teams had their hands full this Thursday when they took on the Galt Warriors at home. The Freshmen squad pulled out the lone victory for Cordova while JV and Varsity lost their matches.

Varsity put up a valiant effort but in the end, it wasn’t enough to get the win. The Warriors came out of the gate with guns blazing in the first game and won 14-25. Cordova responded in kind with an impressive second game in which they topped Galt by a score of 25-16. Much to the disappointment of the Lancers, their opponents were able to take the next two games 19-25 and 20-25.

Most of the action tonight took place in the fourth game. Cordova started out strong and jumped ahead early, 4-1. Galt seemed to be getting frustrated and was making small mistakes in which the Lancers capitalized on and furthered their lead 9-2. Unfortunately, somewhere along the line Cordova ran out of gas and the Warriors slowly crept ahead for the eventual win.

The loss for Cordova was very disappointing for head coach Erin Muse who said that “we definitely should have won this game.” And that it’s frustrating because “we’ve had some key players come down with illnesses or injury that are really hurting us right now.”

Despite their lack of luck so far this season, the Lancers are still optimistic. “We have one of the toughest leagues in the area” according to Muse, “and I know that we can still be competitive with these teams no matter who they are.”

Cordova has another home match next Thursday against a tough Christian Brothers team; Varsity starts at 7:00. Come out to the Lancer’s gym to watch the girls and make some noise!

With three quarters of action completed in their Friday night football game, the Cordova Lancers lead El Camino by a score of 28-14. The only thing that stood between them and their first victory of the season was a 15-minute Fourth Quarter and of course, the El Camino Eagles. Unfortunately for Cordova, the Eagles proved to be a bit too much and lost by a final score of 28-35.

The Lancers started off the game strong as they scored two touchdowns in the First Quarter to put them up 14-7.

Second Quarter action started with Cordova kicking the ball off to El Camino after a Lancer touchdown. The Eagles’ receiver ran the ball for a 50-yard return but was finally tackled just short of the goal line. Two plays later, #7 Myron Baldoz-Mcarm rushed for a 3-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14 points a piece.

With Cordova now in possession of the ball, the Lancers would slowly creep their way up the field towards the end zone. Quarterback Reggie Langford was their go-to player for the game as he frequently was given the nod to keep the ball and pick up some extra yards. This proved to be successful as he ran for a 22-yard touchdown late in the quarter to put the Lancers up 21-14.

The first half of the game was capped off by an El Camino fumble in which Cordova was able to recover and put them back on offense. After another switch in possessions, the Eagles’ offense desperately attempted to air out the ball in hopes of tying the game before the half; they would not succeed.

In the third quarter, El Camino appeared to be losing steam as Cordova ran all over them and #4 Michael Lindsey punched in a rushing touchdown to make the score 28-14 Lancers.

As the last quarter approached the Eagles seemed to miraculously get their energy back and began to fight against the Lancers and break their will. Whatever they did, it worked because El Camino rushed for three unanswered touchdowns to put them ahead of Cordova 28-35 which was the final score.

The Lancers looked good in their second game but obviously have a few kinks to work out if they are to collect some wins for the season. We’ll see if they do so next week as they take on Florin High School at Monterey Trail. Hope to see you there.

Thursday was a tough night for the Rosemont High School volleyball squad as the Freshmen, JV, and Varsity teams were swept by Oakmont. Varsity lost in three sets 14-25, 8-25, and 18-25.

The Wolverines were never able to muster up a full fledged attack because the Vikings struck hard and fast. For every move that Rosemont made, Oakmont was always one step ahead and never looked back. The third set of the match was the most competitive as Rosemont fought hard to stay alive but ultimately lost the battle.

Head Coach Matt Williams was disappointed with the loss but still satisfied with his teams’ performance. Oakmont has one of the top ten programs in the area and Williams believes that in order to become a better team “you have to play the best.”

Losses aren’t always a bad thing because they can give you a taste of what you did wrong but also show you many things that you did right. Williams says that his girls showed “good team work” and that certain players are starting to “step up as leaders.”

This game brings the Wolverines’ overall season record to 4-6. The team hits the court next in Stockton as they take on the Bear Creek Bruins and league action begins October 1st against Sacramento High School.

The Cordova High football team began their new season last Saturday against Hiram Johnson High School at Lancer Field. Even though the scrimmage was an unofficial game that has no bearing on their record, you would never be able to tell by the seriousness and intensity of the Lancer’s players.

The Johnson High team is partly responsible for riling up the home team as many fans found their pregame antics to be disrespectful, which gave Cordova extra motivation during their encounter. Coach Perry Mansch topped of the teams’ intensity by barking at them in the huddle to make Johnson “…respect our field, scrimmage or not!”

From the very first whistle to start the game, it became evident that Cordova was out there to handle their business and would not let up until they were finished. On the first drive of the scrimmage the Lancers were on the defensive side of the ball and made their presence known immediately as they drove Johnson back into negative yardage. In fact, the Warriors would not gain a single yard until much later in the game.

Middle linebacker Adam Braithwaite was largely responsible for shutting down Johnson’s running game up the center of the field as he was more than eager to hit anyone running by him in an opposing jersey. Assistant Coach Daniel Ziemer says that Braithwaite is the epitome of what they like to call “smash-mouth football” in which their defensive players are nothing more than lean, mean, tackling machines.

Cordova’s offense was just as impressive. From the first snap of their offensive drive, the Lancer’s rammed the ball down the Warrior’s throats and began their march down field. At this point the frustration on behalf of the Johnson team became evident as one of their players made a blatantly late tackle on one of Cordova’s players. This obviously upset the Lancers but Coach Mansch did a great job of keeping his team in line by reminding them to “keep their heads in the game” and to “not let their emotions take over.”

The Lancer’s answered back from the late hit incident on the very next play by giving the ball to Senior Michael Lindsey who obliged by running the ball over 20 yards for a touchdown.

For the remainder of the scrimmage it went much the same way; Cordova continued to dominate while Johnson’s frustration grew. By the game’s end Johnson had virtually thrown in the towel while the Lancers walked off the field with their heads held high. There was no official score kept for the game but it was obvious who the victors were.

Coach Mansch commented that he was “very pleased with our performance” but also admitted that the team “has a few kinks to work out” before the regular season starts. The Lancers officially begin their season with a home game this Friday September 11th, against Bella Vista. Junior Varsity action starts at 5:30pm and Varsity at 7:30pm. Hope to see you there.

Cordova High School begins the 2009 season with a new varsity head coach that has a familiar face. Perry Mansch, an English and speech/debate teacher for the school, has been an assistant coach for the Lancers since 1998.

After a disappointing 1-9 season last year, Cordova High decided to change leadership and give Mansch the nod as head coach.

Mansch describes last year’s experience as “sobering,” but is optimistic for the upcoming season.

The coaching staff at Cordova High has set some realistic goals for themselves this year and is putting “discipline as a high priority,” according to Mansch. The team has been working hard throughout the summer which has instilled a newly found work ethic that they hope will aid them in the upcoming season.

The Lancers are returning a number of players from last year that they feel will play a key role in their success this season. Senior middle linebacker Adam Braithwaite will lead the defense while Chris Lane, a junior, fills the role as starting quarterback for the offense. Lane will have the privilege of utilizing two big, fast wideouts in 6’2”, 180-pound Reggie Langsford and 6’4”, 195-pound Deshawn Smith; both will be crucial in running the teams’ Wildcat offense formation this season.

Also, for the first time in the school’s history, there will be two starters playing both sides of the ball who are Russian immigrants: Paul Kolosey, a tight end/linebacker, and Nick Mirinov, who will be playing fullback/defensive tackle.

Pre-season action starts this Saturday, September 5th at 3:00pm as the Lancers scrimmage Hiram Johnson High School on Cordova’s home turf. Come out and support your local Cordova High Football team and help cheer them to victory.

Cordova Recreation and Park District’s newly renovated Mather Sport Center has been recognized as a winner in the Multi-Purpose Turf category by the American Sports Builders Association. The project was designed by Beals Alliance, and is the culmination of a $15 million renovation of the former Mather Air Force bases recreational facilities.

The Cordova Recreation and Park District took over the facility upon the closure of Mather Air Force base, completing the nation’s first free public benefit conveyance of real property ownership from the federal government as a result of the military base closures in the early 1990s.

This project is the first phase in a multi-phased renovation planned for the facility, and was funded by a combination of grants, partnerships, public funding, and loans. The Mather Sports Center now includes a full lighted synthetic turf softball/soccer triplex with concession area, stadium style seating, a plaza style skate park, new playground, lighted synthetic turf soccer field, natural grass baseball field, walking track, pentaque court, in-line skate hockey court, and full gym.

This facility is now one of the finest sports complexes in the Sacramento region, and is expected to bring participants for tournaments from all over the state. It will bring new revenue to the area as teams travel and stay in hotels, eat in restaurants and purchase fuel, as well as providing something for everyone in the family to participate in as they recreate and pursue a fit lifestyle together.

For more details about the Mather Sports Center, please call 916-362-1841. Mather Sports Center is located at 3755 Schriever Ave, Mather, CA 95655.

The Willie Mac Award is about as prestigious as they come in the world of Junior Giants. Junior Giants must display the Four Bases of Character Development; confidence, leadership, teamwork and integrity, to even be considered for such an honor. Two Rancho Cordova residents and Junior Giants, Monique and Monae Newton embody those qualities as well as many others and were the proud, yet humble, recipients of the Willie Mac award at Sunday’s Giants Game.

The thirteen year old twin sisters live in Rancho Cordova and are active in the Police Activities League. Not only are they active members of PAL, but they help to promote the organization to their peers. Always the first to volunteer, these young women are prime examples of leaders who impact others by their service.

PAL Officer, Zach Hatch, nominated the young ladies for the Willie Mac Award. The nomination letter he sent to the Junior Giants tells volumes about how much he respects and values Monae and Monique. The following is a brief passage from the letter and a testament to their leadership abilities. “Because of their positive, confident spirit, humble attitudes, and willingness to learn, they create a teamwork environment for their entire team. Other youth look up to them in their natural leadership roles. ”

The recipients of the Willie Mac Award received the award Sunday to the cheers of thousands of Giants fans at AT&T Park. The recipients were also able to meet San Francisco Giants Hall of Famer, Willie McCovey, of whom the award is named. The small group of young people are truly an embodiment of the leadership of the future. We are lucky in Rancho Cordova, to have such a competent and confident pair of young women who call our community home.
