To all of our readers, contributors, advertisers, fans and followers we want to extend a sincere thank you for three and a half years of sharing news, announcements, and events with you. At the end of January 2011 we will be signing-off for good. Due to the current economic conditions and marketplace we will no longer be able to continue publishing our daily news and events information for Rancho Cordova and beyond.

It has truly been our pleasure sharing stories with you and helping to connect the community. We hope you’ve enjoyed our hyperlocal online news service and encourage you to stay connected to other local online outlets. It has been a memorable experience for all of us as we’ve shared good times and bad, high points and low. We believe we have forged a new path for local news and community engagement we hope will spread throughout the region. There are good signs it has already begun.

The best way to close is goodbye and thank you, we’ll see you soon.

Assemblymember Alyson Huber, a past Cal Grant recipient, wants to remind students and parents that March 2nd is the deadline to apply for CalGrants. Cal Grants, a need-based financial aid program, has been a big part of making college affordable for many California families. To assist students with applying for CalGrants and other financial aid, Assemblymember Huber also announced Cash for College workshops being held in January and February around the Sacramento region.

“Paying for school is tough. I know because I was the first in my family to graduate from college and financial aid helped make it possible for me to succeed,” said Assemblymember Alyson Huber. “Today, every low- or moderate-income student who meets the academic standards is guaranteed a Cal Grant award and we must do everything we can to ensure that every eligible student takes advantage of this extraordinary opportunity.”

In the 10th Assembly District, Cash for College Workshops are being held at Cordova High School on January 26th from 6:30-8:30pm and at Florin High School on February 9th from 6-8pm. High school seniors who attend a Cash for College workshop and apply for a Cal Grant by March 2nd could receive an extra $1,000 scholarship. For a list of additional workshops locations and dates click here.

Eligible students receive grants for tuition and fees at the California State University or the University of California. Awards are also given to community college students and students entering private California colleges, including technical education programs.

Students must apply for a Cal Grant by submitting a Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Form and a Cal Grant Grade Point Average Verification Form. Changes in the law guarantee that every eligible student will get a Cal Grant award of up to $11,124 a year, depending on the cost of their college or university, their financial need and the type of grant. One of the most important things to note, Cal Grants do not have to be repaid.

For more information on the Cal Grant Program, how to obtain an application, or how to fill out an application, high school students can contact their counselors, or call the California Student Aid Commission at 1-888-224-7268. Additionally, the commission has a web site.

For more information, please call (916) 319-2010.

On Tuesday, December 14, GenCorp Foundation will present Sgt. Maj. John Lamb, Director of Starbase Academy, with a gift of $50,000 during a special ceremony at Navigator Elementary School. The check will be presented by Juanita Garcia, Executive Director of the GenCorp Foundation.

GenCorp has also graciously donated $35,000 to Project Lead the Way and $4,500 to the Folsom Cordova Middle School Science Fair, bringing GenCorp’s total support to FCUSD to $89,500. The $50,000 donation to Starbase is a 2-year donation, with Starbase receiving $25,000 a year.

A program of the California National Guard, the Starbase (Science and Technology Academics Reinforcing Basic Aviation and Space Exploration) Program teaches the fifth grade students at Navigator Elementary, near Mather, fundamental skills in the sciences and math.

Project Lead the Way is a national organization that prepares students for college and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Project Lead the Way focuses on developing problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and creative reasoning through engaging, hands-on learning.

Middle school students from Rancho Cordova and Folsom compete in several different categories for the top prizes in the GenCorp/Folsom Cordova Middle School Science Fair. Categories include Earth, life and physical sciences and contestants can enter individually or with a group.

FCUSD greatly appreciates GenCorp’s contributions to the district and its programs. During a time of budget cuts and economic uncertainty, it is comforting to have an organization donate resources to ensure the continuance of these great programs.

The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) is again awarding high school diplomas to qualifying U.S. veterans and Japanese American citizens through its popular “Operation Recognition” program.

The Operation Recognition program was adopted in October 2001 by the Sacramento County Board of Education to honor the contributions and sacrifices of individuals who missed completing high school to serve in the U.S. military (specifically World War II or the Korean War) or relocate to a World War II internment camp for Japanese American citizens. In 2005, the County Board of Education expanded the program to include veterans of the Vietnam War.

The Sacramento County Board of Education has provided diplomas to 148 qualifying veterans and Japanese American citizens through Operation Recognition since 2001. Six of the diplomas have been awarded posthumously.

Residents of Sacramento County are encouraged to request diplomas on behalf of themselves or qualifying family members, including persons who are now deceased. May 2, 2011, is the deadline to submit applications. The Sacramento County Board of Education is scheduled to hold its next Operation Recognition diploma awards ceremony on Tuesday, May 17, 2011.

Operation Recognition applications are available online at or or by mail from: Operation Recognition, P.O. Box 269003, Sacramento, CA 95826-9003. To request that an application be mailed, phone (916) 228-2416. Applications are also available from the Sacramento County Veterans Service Office, located in midtown Sacramento at 2007-19th Street.

Qualifications for an Operation Recognition diploma include: (1) Applicant or recipient is a Sacramento County resident; (2) Veterans must show proof of Honorable Discharge from U.S. military service occurring during WW II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War (DD Form 214 preferred); (3) Japanese American citizens—show proof of internment in a WW II relocation camp; and (4) Veterans and Japanese American citizens—give name of high school applicant was attending at time of induction into military service or internment.

An application may be submitted by a family member of a qualifying individual, living or deceased. Persons who meet the qualifications, but earned a GED, are eligible. Diploma recipients and/or survivors should be current or former Sacramento County residents. Those living outside Sacramento County will be referred to their local county office of education.

The Mitchell Music Boosters is hosting its first Music-A-Thon on Saturday, November 6. We are hoping to raise money for the music department at Mitchell, for the purchase of music, instruments, instrument repair and to possibly help fund a trip in the Spring.

As you probably know the arts in schools have been in jeopardy for the past several years. The economy, housing and the state’s financial crisis have all contributed to the decline of arts funding across California. The Folsom Cordova Unified School District made the decision last year to cut the electives (including music and art) at the middle schools across the district.

Fortunately the teachers voted for a reduction in pay for the year in order to bring back the elective courses. Without our community support, we could see more cuts to Arts Education in our district. While the FCUSD Board has been very supportive of Arts Education in the past, they have been forced to make difficult decisions regarding funding of

the Arts for the past several years. With your support we can make sure the arts are fully funded and an integral part of the school day.

Please join us on Saturday, and consider offering a donation to Mitchell Middle School Music. If you have any questions please e-mail Dan McCrossen at dmccross@fcusd.org.

The event featured the unveiling of a plaque, as well as words of praise from Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools David W. Gordon and Board of Education President Harold Fong. Elizabeth Kim, Field Representative for District 10 Assemblymember Alyson Huber, also presented Mr. Young with a special certificate of recognition from the State Assembly. The celebration concluded with a cake and punch reception.

Cy Young joined the Sacramento County Office of Education Personnel Commission in 1983, where he served continuously until 2007. As a Personnel Commissioner for over 24 years, he proved his dedication and service to the Commission and was a true proponent of the Merit System and the Merit principles.
“Over the years, the Sacramento County Office of Education Personnel Commission has become the standard for other commissions to follow,” said Mr. Young. “I am happy, shocked, surprised, and grateful to have, for so many years, been associated with and worked with the great staff and employees of SCOE. Everyone should be so lucky.”

Cy Young left his position as Personnel Commissioner at SCOE after serving 24 years because he moved out of Sacramento county. Since then, he has been involved in school advisory boards, has been a member of Teachers of Tomorrow selection panels for awarding scholarships to deserving high school seniors, has served on the Sacramento County Teacher of the Year selection panel, and currently serves on the California Troops to Teachers screening and selection panel. In addition, Mr. Young has served as Vice President and President of the Schools Projects Financing Corporation of California.

The newly dedicated Clellan “Cy” Young Building is located at 10530 Mather Boulevard, Mather, California, 95655.
The Cordova Interact Club could be seen this summer at Straw Hat Pizza on Tuesdays making plans for the upcoming school year. For those unfamiliar with Interact, it’s the high school level of Rotary International.

The name Interact comes from “International Action”, and at Cordova High their motto is “Inter-actually doing things”. CHS Interact wrapped up the school year with a Presentation to the School Board May 20th, and in June were featured in ONE Community eNewspaper for their People Helping People Award. In June the Interacters also visited a Rotary meeting to watch a presentation from the CSUS Rotaract (college level Rotary) Club after this high school club donated funds to help them on their way to Istanbul for an International Rotaract Conference.

During the summer Interacters could also be seen at Eppie’s Great Race for the third year in a row, helping with watercraft take-out at the event. In July Interacters held the Rancho Cordova banner in the Rancho Cordova parade at the State fair, leading the parade for the third year in a row!

Senior, Vanessa Martinez, Interact President says, “I’m looking forward to another Charity Arts Night because knowing that we can help people across the world is so exciting. The feeling of accomplishment you get afterwards is indescribable.” Vanessa was the mastermind behind the unique event Charity Arts Night that is coming up again in January. This event has raised several thousand dollars, which has been sent all over the world to fund water projects. Funds raised at this event have gone towards Water For People, and international organization that provides clean water to those who lack it. Ica, Peru suffered an 8.0 earthquake that destroyed its wells, and had money sent from Interact via Rotarians working in the area. Those in Malawi, Africa have received monies for clean water wells. Guatemala was another beneficiary of this event, and when the Haiti tragedy struck money was funneled there as well.

Then there are people like their senior co-Secretary Erika, who says, “Honestly, I don’t have a single most thing I look forward to most because every little event is just too much fun, seriously! From scraping dirt off walls to serving families at Breakfast with Santa, I just like how we’re together; that’s what I look forward to. We work together having fun and working hard at the same time. Who wouldn’t look forward to that?”

Interact just helped out at the California Capitol Air Show Gala, bussing tables and collecting recyclables to be used to generate funds for Relay for Life, which was Oct 2nd and 3rd. Some other annual projects include the Rotary holiday food project where they collect and pass out food baskets in conjunction with their parent RC Rotary Club, the Rotary Crab Feed, and the Easter Egg Hunt at Hagan Park in April. If you have questions, want to get involved, (or just keep track of this club) add them on myspace.com or join the facebook group; they love new friends!
Schaber Mock Trial and Moot Court Program for the 2010–11 school year.

The Mock Trial competition simulates a trial-level proceeding in which students portray the roles of pre-trial counsel, prosecuting and defense attorneys, witnesses, court clerks, bailiffs, and jurors before a single presiding judge and two scoring judges. It includes courtroom art and courtroom journalism competitions.

The Moot Court competition is an appellate-level proceeding in which students prepare and argue a case before a panel of three judges that evaluates participants on the quality and persuasiveness of their legal reasoning and presentation, as well as their unscripted responses to spontaneous questions from the bench. The county Mock Trial winner advances to a statewide competition.

School teams and students compete for individual, county, and team competition titles.
“High school law court programs are excellent extracurricular activities that encourage leadership, critical thinking, and organization,” said David W. Gordon, Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools. “The county office is proud to coordinate the Mock Trial and Moot Court programs.”

Last year in Sacramento County, 20 teams and nearly 375 students participated in Mock Trial, and eight teams and approximately 55 students competed in Moot Court. More than 150 legal professionals and judicial leaders volunteer to help educate youth about the courts, assess participants’ skills, and provide real-world perspectives on the rule of law.

SCOE will coordinate a Mock Trial coaches meeting on Monday, October 4, 2010, and a Moot Court coach meeting on Thursday, October 7, 2010, to provide more information about the program. These meetings will take place from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. in the Mather Room at the David P. Meaney Education Center.

The competition rounds are scheduled for the month of February 2011. In addition, SCOE is looking forward to developing partnerships with the local legal community to ensure the program’s future.

Anyone with questions about the Mock Trial or Moot Court competitions can contact Craig Irish at (916) 228-2660 or cirish@scoe.net.

The Folsom Cordova Unified School District Liaison for Homeless Services has informed Project 680 of a big need for hooded sweatshirts (otherwise known as “hoodies”) for the homeless students in the FCUSD. Therefore, Project 680 will be holding a hoody drive from September 27-October 27, 2010. Kids like zipper front hoodies (see photo), so that is what we will be collecting. We are asking for NEW (not used) zip-front hoodies in any color or size for kids in grades K-12. Hoodies can be in solid colors or can have graphics, as long as the graphics are school appropriate.

As the hoody drive rolls out in September 2010, we invite residents, churches, businesses and organization to get involved. We encourage locals to put out feelers to people they know, pick a goal for how many hoodies to collect, become a drop-off location, share about the hoody drive on Facebook, come to our finale party on October 27, and definitely enter the photography contest as a way to show your support for the hoody drive. Did we mention our goal is to collect 680 hoodies?

Project 680 is pleased to announce a partnership with The Rancho Cordova Post for the group’s hoody drive. The Post will be hosting images for our photo contest, which will go from September 10 to October 25, 2010. Each person can submit up to six photos during the contest. You must include “Project 680 Hoody Drive” or “project680.org” somewhere in the photo. When you take a photo (or groups of photos), email them to info@project680.org and we’ll get them online for you. Maybe you could make a sign, hold a piece of paper, write on your skin, or get a tattoo (uh, hopefully not). Be creative and show your support for P680. There are six photo categories, which include: neighborhood, kids, pets, creative, work and whackiest photo. The “kids” category is really designed for kids to actually take the photo too!!!

Judges will select winners from each category to have their photos displayed at Rancho Cordova City Hall on October 27, 2010 from 4:30-7:00pm at our celebration party. And of course we’ll buy you a hot chocolate too because all winners should drink hot cocoa. We welcome people of all ages and locations to enter the contest and show your support for the Hoody Drive. Visit www.ranchocordovapost.com/project680 to view all photo entries.

Advocating for local homeless students is something we can all do. In this case, it’s really about doing something very simple and practical – collecting hoodies. Together we can make a difference.

Congresswoman Doris Matsui announced today that California State University, Sacramento’s Student Support Services (SSS) Program will receive an award of $275,940 from the Department of Education. These funds were awarded through a competitive grant program and provide support and assistance to low-income, first-generation, or disabled college students in order to ensure they remain in school and graduate. SSS Program services may include instruction in basic study skills, tutorial services, personal counseling, financial aid assistance, career guidance, and mentoring.

“I am excited that Sacramento State will receive this award and be able to further their efforts in supporting at-risk students,” said Rep. Matsui. “It is imperative that we empower our educational institutions with the financial resources they need to support their students, specifically those who are at risk of falling through the cracks.”

“This Federal grant recognizes the work and support Sacramento State gives to students with disabilities and will enable us to continue to improve upon services to those who are in need, helping them reach their goal of graduation,” said Melissa Repa, Project Director of Student Support Services at Sacramento State. “We’re excited and grateful that we’ll be able to continue the program.”

Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez added, “Sacramento State is proud of our Student Support Services for the Disabled. This program helps our disabled students succeed and furthers the University’s strategic goals of diversity and access to a quality education. Congresswoman Matsui’s efforts to secure this grant, and her continued support for all Sacramento State students, are greatly appreciated.”

Teenagers in Sacramento County drop out of school for a variety of reasons and the large number of students making that choice is alarming local educators. For that reason, the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) is launching an effort designed to curtail the dropout rate and provide teens with information about the educational opportunities available to them.

GO BACK TO SCHOOL is a radio public service campaign involving partnerships between SCOE and local radio stations serving the Sacramento County area. The announcements — available in English and Spanish — contain a resource number (916-228-2357) which people can contact for help in determining which local education agency can meet their needs.

“There is a well-documented earnings gap between high school graduates and dropouts,” said Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools David W. Gordon. “Many studies have determined the annual difference is nearly $10,000. And those young people with only a high school diploma have difficulty finding stable, well-paying jobs.”

Sacramento area radio stations owned by Bustos Media, CBS Radio, Clear Channel, Entercom and Entravision will periodically broadcast public service announcements designed to encourage young people who have not completed their high school educations to re-enroll in school, earn the credits needed for a high school diploma, and seek career guidance and job training. Announcements also will appear on the “community” section of several of the radio station’s websites.

“We are grateful to the media outlets partnering with us on the GO BACK TO SCHOOL campaign, which we believe will have a positive impact on so many of the young people in Sacramento County who are seeking better opportunities,” Superintendent Gordon said.

Some dropout facts:

According to the California Department of Education, the Sacramento County dropout rate is currently a little more than 21-percent, while the dropout rate in California stands at nearly 19 percent.

The California Dropout Research Project at the University of California at Santa Barbara determined that California dropouts from the class of 2009 alone could cost state and federal governments nearly $50 billion dollars over the course of their lives in lost wages, social programs, and incarceration and health care costs.

A 2009 study by the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University, in Boston, determined in California alone there were 710,838 dropouts, a figure that would rank as the seventeenth most populous city in the United States, larger than Fort Worth, Texas, and Seattle, Washington.

In 2007, nearly 6.2 million students in the United States — between the ages of 16 and 24 — dropped out of high school. Most of the dropouts were Latino or Black.

SCOE plays a vital role in providing technical assistance, curriculum and instructional support, staff development, fiscal services and oversight to Sacramento County school districts. SCOE operates special education programs for students with severe disabilities, Court and Community Schools for high-risk and at-risk students, and career technical education courses.

Sacramento County Office of Education Recruiting Adult Mentors for Special Program

Mentoring doesn’t require a unique skill. It just takes a willingness to listen, offer encouragement, and share knowledge of what you’ve learned about life.

If you have what it takes to help young people navigate life’s tough choices please consider serving as a mentor. The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) is seeking adult mentors to serve as positive role models as part of the LINKS Mentoring Program for high school students for the 2010-11 school year.

The target start date for the LINKS Mentoring Program is September 20, 2010. Qualifying mentors may commit to a semester, or an entire school year. Meetings and activities center on specific themes:

• Community Service/Service Learning Projects
• Interpersonal/Life Skills
• Planning for the Future
• Career Exploration/Job Seeking Skills
• Financial Savvy and Money Management
• Health and Wellness

There are options for individual and team mentoring, if mentors are unable to meet with protégés every week. SCOE staff members attend group mentor sessions to organize activities and provide materials and support. Meeting days and times for each site will be determined before sessions begin.

In addition to individuals, SCOE would like to partner with businesses and organizations interested in volunteering one hour per week to work with underserved students at the following campuses:

Elinor Hickey Jr/Sr High School (Sacramento County Office of Education)
2040 Ethan Way
Sacramento, CA 95825

North Area Jr/Sr High School (Sacramento County Office of Education)
4000 Pinell Street
Sacramento, CA 95838

Calvine High School (Elk Grove Unified School District)
8333 Vintage Park Drive
Sacramento 95828

Kinney High School (Folsom Cordova Unified School District)
2710 Kilgore Road
Rancho Cordova, CA 95670

The LINKS Mentoring Program is operated by the Sacramento County Office of Education’s Prevention and Student Services (PASS) Department. The program is made possible through a $500,000 grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

LINKS is a groundbreaking SCOE career technical education model aimed at helping high-risk students succeed. Services are tailored to individual students based on their specific needs instead of through traditional, scripted education.

To learn more about the LINKS Mentoring Program, contact Cheryl Raney (916) 228-2201 or craney@scoe.net.
In order for these students to be readmitted to their schools, especially in cases reaching the court system, they must successfully complete a sanctioned violence prevention program. Project SAVE (Safe Alternatives and Violence Education) is one such program. It is a program that needs the public’s help and support.

The 8th Annual Project SAVE Golf Tournament is scheduled for Monday, September 20, 2010 at the Rancho Murieta Country Club, in Rancho Murieta, California. Check in begins at 8:30 a.m. and the shotgun start will be at 9:30 a.m. This annual fundraiser is the main source of funding for this model community project that has been proven to prevent and reduce youth violence and bullying behaviors.

The mission of Project SAVE is to reduce youth violence and weapons possession through strong partnerships with local agencies. The mission emphasizes that weapons possession and violent behavior are unacceptable, especially on school grounds. Since 1998, Project SAVE has served more than 2,000 young people in Sacramento County. Nine out of ten participants remain violence-free after participating in the program.

Project SAVE is a collaborative project involving the County Probation Department, County Sheriff’s Office, Sacramento City Police Department, Superior and Municipal Courts, Sacramento County School Districts and community members and is coordinated by the Prevention and Student Services division of the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE).

Entry fees for the September 20, 2010 golf tournament are $150 per person or $600 for a foursome.

Watch out Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Larry Ellison—the future faces of engineering are changing, thanks to summer programs like the 2010 Gateway Academy in the Folsom Cordova Unified School District (FCUSD). The 2010 Gateway Academy was held at Mitchell Middle School in Rancho Cordova June 7-10, 2010.

Sponsored by LEED-Linking Education and Economic Development, Intel, and The Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation (SME-EF), 30 FCUSD middle school girls spent the week learning the fundamentals of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and were encouraged to continue their experiences in Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Gate Way to Technology (GTT) course work at the middle and high school levels.

“Working with such a motivated and enthusiastic group of students and teachers has been the best experience of my teaching career,” said Dale Waldo, PLTW teacher at Mitchell Middle School. “We completed many projects successfully and the students and teachers gained many valuable insights into the amazing amounts of creativity that our young people possess. I am confident that many of these young women will move onto engineering and other careers with a high degree of success!”

Students were required to submit an application essay outlining their reasons for wanting to participate in the Gateway Academy. Some excerpts from the essays include:
“I will develop creative and scientific skills at Gateway Academy that will carry with me through my whole life. “ (Morgan Andrus, Mills Middle School)

“My dad makes machines at his job, so I would like to know more about what he does.” (Madeline Cariveau, Mitchell Middle School)

“My uncle is an engineer and says that I am smart enough to be one too.” (Alexis Pinkney, Mitchell Middle School)

Certified PLTW instructors—Debbie Krikourian (Sutter Middle School), Dale Waldo (Mitchell Middle School) and Stephanie Bird (Mills Middle School)–headed up this free summer activity, and provided expert instruction in small group settings. Students worked together in a fun, exciting environment using leading-edge technologies to sample such disciplines as: design and modeling, science of technology, automation and robotics, aeronautics, rockets, energy and the environment, and electronics. “Our future looks amazing with so many bright, innovative young ladies to lead us,” said Debbie Krikourian, Sutter Middle School PLTW teacher.
Project Lead the Way is a program that provides standards-based pre-engineering, technology, clean energy technology and biomedical sciences curriculum to more than 3,000 high schools and middle schools nationwide. LEED-Linking Education and Economic Development manages the Sacramento PLTW Network as the lead agency working to increase the number of school districts administering PLTW programs and create more partnerships between schools and employers in the Sacramento region.

The Sacramento region boasts 26 of 139 total PLTW programs in the state of California, including three Master Teachers for national training, and the 2009 PLTW Teacher of the Year (Debra Crane, Galt High School). For more information about PLTW, please visit www.pltw.org.

In an effort to trim operating costs by $14.1 million for the 2010-2011 school year, the Folsom Cordova Unified School District has tentatively agreed to cut the school year by three days, Superintendent Pat Godwin said Thursday.

By implementing the school year reduction, the school district will be able to rescind layoff notices for approximately 20 employees of the district, a tentative agreement with thr Folsom Cordova Education Association said. The school district had original sent out 92 preliminary layoff notices in March, but with the school year reduction the number of layoffs has been reduced to 77. A three-day work reduction amounts to a 3 percent salary cut for remaining employees, Godwin said.

The agreement would also allow the district to restore middle school electives and keep class sizes small in first and second grade classes.

Members of the education association will vote on the tentative agreement between May 20 and May 27, and ratification results will be available May 29. The school year reduction requires 55 percent approval by the association’s members before it will be ratified.

“The agreement with FCEA (if approved by the membership) will allow us to address the Board’s highest priority: maintaining middle school electives,” Godwin said in a budget update. ”However, we have other great needs that are still unmet. The Governing Board would embrace the opportunity to continue discussions with the teachers’ union… especially as we learn more about the agreements reached in other districts.”

Also being considered by the school board are cuts to freshman sports, funding only certain sports at the high school level, reducing library services to one day per week for elementary and two days per week for high school, charging for summer school and increasing the athletic fee from $75 to $200 per year. The school board has already approved the closure of Riverview and Cordova Lane elementary schools at the end of the school year to save the district $600,000 for 2010-2011.

Principal Jackie Levy issued a call in early April to vote for Cordova High in a contest to win $1,500, and the Rancho Cordova community did not disappoint: The school won the contest with over 900 votes cast for them.

The contest was held by Apperson Print Resources, and Cordova High was one of nine finalists selected for this round of voting. The contest is held six times per year; Franklin Elementary in Loomis, Calif. was the winner of the previous round.

Levy said the money will be used to support the school’s Girls Group, and money will be set aside for field trips to visit colleges and go do volunteer work. The money will also help the school put on a year-end recognition ceremony for girls who complete the program.

“Many of you took the time to vote and I thank you so much for helping us,” Levy said in a message to the effort’s supporters. ”Faith and Jocelyn (girls group leaders) are thrilled to be able to have the resources to do even more with the girls this year and in the future.”

Nominations for the third round of the contest have just ended, and voting will begin on May. The contest won’t start up again until Aug. 1, when the company will open up nominations again and a new batch of schools will have the chance to win.

Eight teen bands will have the chance to wow the community at Cordova High this Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Cordova Recreation and Park District’s Battle of the Bands 2010.

The competition is the second Battle of the Bands event for the district, and eight teen bands are scheduled to perform: Ready Set Shazaam, Cordova High Jazz Band, Riverview, Jacob Thomas Band, Caption, Risk 13, Reckless Abandon and Dorian’s Eternal Youth are all scheduled to play. To qualify for the competition, at least 50 percent of the band’s members had to be age 12 to 21.

Battle of the Bands will be Risk 13′s first competition since their formation in 2008, though drummer Ben Hamilton said they have done similar events in the past. “We did one but it wasn’t as big as this one,” he said. “We haven’t been in any contests to win.”

Hamilton, 15, said he and his bandmates are hoping the event will lead to bigger and better things. “We want to get our name out and get more chances to play for people,” he said. Risk 13 will be taking the stage at 8:30, and Hamilton also said the winner of the competition will be opening at a Pablo Cruz concert.

Tickets for admission cost $2 at the door, and refreshments and snacks will be for sale on site. Cordova High is located at 2239 Chase Drive; coordinators are advising the public to arrive at 6:15 p.m. because the show will start promptly at 6:30 p.m.

When the Folsom Cordova school board issued the news in Novemberthat Cordova Lane and Riverview Elementaries would be closing at the school year, a group of parents were given the unusual opportunity to try to raise money and save their school.

Save Cordova Lane was an effort headed by parents Kristy Elder and Kathryn Dettner to raise $300,000 by March 1 to keep Cordova Lane open for the 2010-2011 school year. Though the group was not able to raise the staggering amount, they did raise just under $10,000 through discount cards, fundraisers and donations though March. The group is also continuing to receive donations through Raley’s and Bel Air’s Quality of Life program, and they are expecting to receive a check for those donations in July.

Since the group will not be able to keep their school open, they are planning on donating at least $2,500 to Cordova Gardens, Rancho Cordova and Williamson Elementaries once all funds come in.

“Kathryn and Kristy would like to thank everyone who lent a helping hand or expressed concern on behalf of Cordova Lane to keep our school open,” the group said in an email to supporter. ”They will be working with the principals of the new schools where the Cougars will attend next year to distribute funds raised and help our kids on their new journeys.”

Donations were also broken down by the group– they received one donation of $2,500 and sold about 400 discount cards for nearly $4,000, and the group also raised almost $400 through fundraising. Donations, the group said, averaged about $20.

The group will still be answering questions about their effort through their email at savecordovalane@yahoo.com, and they will be updating their supporters regularly on their Facebook page.
If Cordova High wins, the school will be awarded $1,500 to go toward their Girls Group.

The contest is held by Apperson Print Resources, a supplier of educational products and services based out of Washington.
