The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) Board of Directors has approved a $1.54 billion budget. The 2011 budget provides funding for all programs, projects and initiatives needed to meet the strategic targets set by the SMUD Directors, while cutting costs without compromising customer service.

Judge Raymond M. Cadei, judge of the Superior Court of California, County of Sacramento, has overruled a legal challenge to the City of Rancho Cordova Redevelopment Agency’s (RDA) use of eminent domain. In an effort to implement its redevelopment plan and to eliminate blighted conditions along Folsom Boulevard in the City of Rancho Cordova, the RDA filed an eminent domain action in 2009 to acquire an approximate nine-acre site owned by the Lily Company. The Lily Company filed a legal challenge to the RDA’s legal authority to use eminent domain, and Judge Cadei held a seven-day trial on that challenge in October.

With the assistance of Sacramento County Board of Supervisor Susan Peters’ office, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department is pleased to announce the continuation of the Grinch Patrol. The Sheriff’s Department’s budget was recently augmented to provide an added security force to the Arden/Arcade-area shopping malls this holiday season. The program, known as the Grinch Patrol, will begin the day after Thanksgiving (the busiest shopping day of the year), and continue throughout the holiday shopping season. This special funding appropriation is intended to augment existing Sheriff’s Patrol and private security.

Rancho Cordova businesses may be eligible for significant tax savings through the newly-established Enterprise Zone. The program will be explained at the Enterprise Zone Breakfast Seminar on Wednesday November 17th, at Rancho Cordova City Hall, 2729 Prospect Park Drive, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Hosted by the City and the Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce, the free seminar includes a complimentary breakfast.

At the City Council meeting on November 1, staff presented some conceptual ideas for a Gateway monument structure which would serve the purpose of welcoming people into the City.

In a continuing effort to save lives and prevent injuries on our city streets, the Rancho Cordova Police Department and Mercy San Juan Medical Center are once again joining forces to provide better traffic enforcement and a forum to provide child safety seat education to a greater segment of the Rancho Cordova Community. The Rancho Cordova Police Department is expanding their regular traffic enforcement with special operations. These operations are funded by a recent $240,000 grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety. Special traffic enforcement and education measures will be instituted by the Rancho Cordova Police Department and the Mercy San Juan Medical Center as they continue their commitment to keeping our roadways safe through both enforcement and education.

As party-going ghosts and goblins celebrate Halloween this October, the Rancho Cordova Police Department and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department reminds everyone to keep the party off the road.
A DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint and DUI Saturation Patrols are planned this weekend as part of the Department’s ongoing efforts to lower impaired driving in Rancho Cordova and the region. The DUI Checkpoint will be working on Friday October 29 and DUI Saturation Patrols will be out on Saturday and Sunday prior to the little ones heading out for Trick-or-Treating on Sunday evening.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau detectives arrested 20-year-old Sacramento resident Antoine Lee Taylor for his connection to the recent murder of 54-year-old taxi cab driver James Walker. Taylor was arrested in the 3500 block of Sunrise Pines Drive in Rancho Cordova. Taylor is the third suspect arrested for this murder. Jermaine Campbell was arrested on October 19, 2010 and Jonathan Hudson was arrested on October 20, 2010. No additional arrests in this case are expected.

Friends and former colleagues of retired Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) Personnel Commissioner Clellan “Cy” Young attended a celebration Tuesday, October 19, when the SCOE Personnel and Business Services Building was dedicated officially in Mr. Young’s honor.
