When it comes time to giving presents this holiday season, consider something different. Does Grandpa really need a new tie? Are you sure a fruitcake is a good idea? How about a special gift only one generous person can give to another? Donate blood with BloodSource during December, save lives and receive a coupon good for a sweet treat – a pint of Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream.

BloodSource (www.bloodsource.org) has a goal to collect 700 units of blood each day so it can be tested, distributed, and on hospital shelves when needed by patients. Almost 16 million Americans needed blood last year. Every two seconds, a patient in need counts on the lifesaving gift of blood to get through cancer treatment, a surgery, an injury, or childbirth complications. Just three teaspoons can save a baby’s life. Just like Tommy’s.

Tommy Rodacker of Mather, CA needed blood as a seven-month-old for a rare brain cancer affecting only 12 to 15 people in the US each year. Now almost three years old, Tommy is doing well and his family is grateful for blood donors. “It makes the biggest difference in the world,” shares Tommy’s mom, Jennifer.

Blood donation is a gift that costs nothing but an hour of your time. Plus you get snacks and an ice cream coupon! And save lives. It’s a perfect gift made in honor of someone you care for but have no idea what to buy for the holidays.

This holiday season give a gift that truly matters. Call 866.822,5663 today to make your BloodSource appointment to donate blood at a local center or mobile blood drive. You can help a family celebrate the holidays this year and in the years to come…together. What better gift could you give? Together, we do save lives.

Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent form available at www.bloodsource.org) and weigh at least 110 pounds. Drink fluids and eat well before your blood donation.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau detectives arrested 20-year-old Sacramento resident Antoine Lee Taylor for his connection to the recent murder of 54-year-old taxi cab driver James Walker. Taylor was arrested in the 3500 block of Sunrise Pines Drive in Rancho Cordova. Taylor is the third suspect arrested for this murder. Jermaine Campbell was arrested on October 19, 2010 and Jonathan Hudson was arrested on October 20, 2010. No additional arrests in this case are expected.

On October 18, 2010, at 3:14 a.m., Sheriff’s deputies responded to an apartment complex in the 5100 block of Hillsdale Boulevard regarding the report of a shooting. When deputies arrived they found a taxi in the parking lot of the apartment complex. The taxi-driver, James Walker, was sitting in the driver’s seat and suffering from at least one gunshot wound to his upper body. Paramedics arrived a short time later and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Sheriff’s Homicide detectives believe Taylor, Campbell, and Hudson had been visiting friends at the Hillsdale apartment complex and called a taxi with the intent to rob the driver. When Walker arrived at the complex he was confronted by the suspects and shot during the course of the robbery.

Taylor was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail and charged with murder and robbery. He is ineligible for bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned on October 22, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. in Department 61.
The Cordova Interact Club could be seen this summer at Straw Hat Pizza on Tuesdays making plans for the upcoming school year. For those unfamiliar with Interact, it’s the high school level of Rotary International.

The name Interact comes from “International Action”, and at Cordova High their motto is “Inter-actually doing things”. CHS Interact wrapped up the school year with a Presentation to the School Board May 20th, and in June were featured in ONE Community eNewspaper for their People Helping People Award. In June the Interacters also visited a Rotary meeting to watch a presentation from the CSUS Rotaract (college level Rotary) Club after this high school club donated funds to help them on their way to Istanbul for an International Rotaract Conference.

During the summer Interacters could also be seen at Eppie’s Great Race for the third year in a row, helping with watercraft take-out at the event. In July Interacters held the Rancho Cordova banner in the Rancho Cordova parade at the State fair, leading the parade for the third year in a row!

Senior, Vanessa Martinez, Interact President says, “I’m looking forward to another Charity Arts Night because knowing that we can help people across the world is so exciting. The feeling of accomplishment you get afterwards is indescribable.” Vanessa was the mastermind behind the unique event Charity Arts Night that is coming up again in January. This event has raised several thousand dollars, which has been sent all over the world to fund water projects. Funds raised at this event have gone towards Water For People, and international organization that provides clean water to those who lack it. Ica, Peru suffered an 8.0 earthquake that destroyed its wells, and had money sent from Interact via Rotarians working in the area. Those in Malawi, Africa have received monies for clean water wells. Guatemala was another beneficiary of this event, and when the Haiti tragedy struck money was funneled there as well.

Then there are people like their senior co-Secretary Erika, who says, “Honestly, I don’t have a single most thing I look forward to most because every little event is just too much fun, seriously! From scraping dirt off walls to serving families at Breakfast with Santa, I just like how we’re together; that’s what I look forward to. We work together having fun and working hard at the same time. Who wouldn’t look forward to that?”

Interact just helped out at the California Capitol Air Show Gala, bussing tables and collecting recyclables to be used to generate funds for Relay for Life, which was Oct 2nd and 3rd. Some other annual projects include the Rotary holiday food project where they collect and pass out food baskets in conjunction with their parent RC Rotary Club, the Rotary Crab Feed, and the Easter Egg Hunt at Hagan Park in April. If you have questions, want to get involved, (or just keep track of this club) add them on myspace.com or join the facebook group; they love new friends!

As dog lovers we tend to be extremely tolerant of what some might perceive as “unmannerly” behavior by our dogs. After all, we’re used to our Bulldog’s habit of smooshing his face (and sometimes-drooly mouth) up against our leg to say “welcome home”. We don’t mind when our Yorkie jumps into our lap as we settle on the couch. And when our exuberant Golden thrusts her nose “south of the border” (wink wink), we understand that she’s just reacquainting herself with us after a long day.

While these normal dog behaviors might be no big deal on a regular day, imagine a gathering in your home for a special occasion (not to stress you out, but the holidays are coming) and suddenly your dog is embarrassing you all over the place.

What to do? Your dog is part of your family. Banishing him for special occasions seems cruel. And if your dog isn’t used to being confined or away from the family, you might need to crank up that festive music to cover up the soundtrack being provided by your barking or howling pup. Ugh.

But don’t worry! There’s still time for you and your dog to learn some basic training that will make your special occasion a lot more enjoyable for everyone, including your dog.

First, identify the “high-value” areas of your home; the places where your dog finds lots of excitement and generally gets lots of attention. Usually this is the front door, the family room, and the kitchen.

If your dog has some obedience under her belt, put a bed or mat in these areas and have your dog down/stay. Practice when there are no distractions (like guests coming and going) and work up to more stimulating circumstances, like when the kids come storming through, the doorbell rings, or a familiar neighbor pops in.

If a consistent down/stay is not part of your dog’s repertoire (welcome to most of the dog-owning world), then start practicing ignoring your dog in these high-value areas.

For example, when you come in the front door, ignore your dog and just go about your business. Instruct kids and neighbors to do the same. This means no talking, no touching, and especially no eye contact. Even if you have to let your dog out for pottying, make this a no-fuss activity without talking or creating any excitement for your dog.

You’ll likely find that your dog will try to get your attention, but will eventually turn away and go find something else to do. Dogs that are accustomed to being the center of attention when you first come home will take longer to give up, but hang in there! Your dog is learning to respect your personal space. And don’t for a second believe his “feelings” are being “hurt”. A dog’s interpretation of being ignored is different than that of a human’s: dog’s read your ignoring them as a sign of leadership – you’re asking for personal space, something that’s hugely important to canines.

During this time of expanding your personal-space bubble, work on teaching your dog to go to his bed – one in each of the high-value areas is ideal – and stay. If his beds are where all the good stuff happens (attention, treats, chew toys) he’ll be happy to comply.

Teaching your dog manners – from your guests’ point of view – takes time, patience, consistency, and a little know-how. But just think how proud you’ll be of your dog (and yourself!) when you can confidently host your guests and share memory-making occasions with your furry best friend.

Don’t have time, patience or know-how? Don’t worry! Let the experts at The Local Bark help with our board-and-train programs. Visit this link for details and pre-holiday specials!

This summer the Folsom Cordova Community Partnership teamed up with SETA, the Sacramento Employment and Training Agency, to administer the Sacramento Works Summer Youth Employment Program in our local area. This program reaches out to disadvantaged youth ages 16 to 21 determined by their economic situation as well as other factors. This is the Partnership’s second year partnering in implementing this program in our local community with 50 youth participants this year and 80 youth participants last year.

The purpose of the Summer Youth Employment Program is to prepare young people for employment through work readiness training on a variety of topics and hands-on work experience in a host work site. This year’s youth attended a 25-hour Work Readiness Boot Camp with us including instruction on Excellence in Customer Service, Diversity Training, Introductions with Impact, and many other topics. We were delighted to bring in speakers from within our local business community to share their knowledge with the youth.

In the following 8 weeks of the program the youth were placed in a host site with local employers where they were able to learn valuable job skills and real work experience. During this time the youth continued to attend five-hour training on Fridays at the Partnership where they obtained additional job skills including resume building, interviewing, and job search strategies. Additionally, during these trainings youth were able to discuss what they were experiencing in their work sites and problem solve together.

The culmination of this program includes these youth having tailored resumes for their job searches and skills and experience to draw from as they interview and enter the job market. We are very pleased to announce eight of this year’s youth participants have already obtained permanent positions since completing this program on August 27th. Eduardo Vera-Quiroz is one of these youth recently hired by his host work site, the Sheepherder Bar and Grille. He had this to say about the program, “Thank you so much for everything. I could not have done it without you guys.” Eduardo learned how to be a prep cook at Sheepherder under the guidance of Chef Jesse Hernandez. Eduardo is now seriously considering attending culinary school and a career in restaurants and hospitality.

The Summer Youth Employment Program is just one of the many ways the Folsom Cordova Community Partnership works to mobilize and integrate resources to impact our community and benefit the families and youth we serve. This program is very unique in that it is a partnership of government, business and community providing federal funds to impact our neighborhoods through community based non-profits like the Partnership and business involvement through host work sites and knowledge sharing. To learn more about the Partnership, visit our website at www.thefccp.org.

Contact Renee John, Employment Services Manager, at 859-0045 ext. 231 or rjohn@thefccp.org to learn more about our Employment Services to the community or to find out how to host a youth next summer.

Aside from the amazing aerial displays and the stunning performances, the California Capital Airshow has so much more to offer the community. From scholarship opportunities for local youth to giving back to local organizations through the concessions, the airshow is truly community based. The California Capital Airshow is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to sending students with an interest in aeronomics and aviation to college. Darcy Brewer, executive director of the airshow, says the four month long process awards students scholarships based on grades, essays, and references from school and the community. This year, 40% of the students awarded scholarships were women. Bewer’s excitement for the students is contagious when she says, “That’s what we (the airshow) were designed for”.

Despite what many would think about an event of this caliber, parking is a breeze. Did you know that Mather Field has one of the largest ramps in the Western United States? Combine that with some creative organizing, and a phenomenal Public Safety and Transportation Committee and you’ll enjoy one of the most stress free parking experience you’ll find at an event this size. Priority Parking, the group that runs the parking program for the airshow, hires young people from Civil Air Patrol and ROTC from the local community. It’s nice to know that your parking fee is helping to pay for the education of potential future aviators.

You might also be surprised to know that on the Friday before the show, there is a special practice run that is open only for special needs children from around the Sacramento area. This year, more than 2,000 kids from local children’s hospitals, the Children’s Miracle Network, Shriners, and United Cerebral Palsy will enjoy a private show. Afterwards, the performers will have lunch with the children and sign autographs.

This year, be sure to check out the concessions. Everyone working concessions are part of local charities working for a per diem that will be donated to their organization or charity. In total, there will be 30 local groups. “Just think”, Brewer said, “every time you purchase a lemonade or a soda pop, you’re giving back to the community”. As an added bonus, concession prices are lower this year to make the airshow an affordable family friendly event.

Life as it is presents us with surprises, good and bad. Often, especially in today’s environment, we have to think quickly and adjust or change our business plans and goals as we have competing priorities and numerous demands on our time.

As we come into the fall season, many business owners will begin looking into their options for open enrollment in the wake of Health Care Reform (HCR). Employers of large and small businesses will have an opportunity to be strategic in explaining benefit changes as it relates to the required changes of the health care reform legislature enacted in March, 2010 (the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as amended by the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act).

A strategic opportunity is to review your group health plan documents and employee communications (i.e. summary plan descriptions and other notices). Many employers are required to amend their group health plans to include new benefits as a result of the HCR legislation for plan years beginning on or after September 23, 2010. For calendar year plans, these benefit changes are effective January 1, 2011.

Another strategic opportunity lies within communicating explanation of benefit changes. According to Peggy Bomberger, of Bricker and Eckler LLP Employment Group, “For instance, the reform act includes a requirement that plan administrators of group health plans provide a notice of material modifications of benefits to participants by 60 days prior to the date the changes are effective”. Although it is unclear whether this new requirement is effective January 1, 2011(for calendar year plans) or March 23, 2012, a strategic minded employer will notify employees of benefit changes prior to November 1, 2010 (calendar
year plan).

Another strategic opportunity is for employers to partner with their plan administrators to ensure that your summary plan descriptions (SPD’s) are provided to plan participants and revised to comply with recent law changes. Plan administrators for a group health plan must provide a SPD to new participants within 90 days after enrollment and to other participants at least every 10 years, provided that the plan terms did not change materially. An example of this would be the plan administrator providing plan participants with an updated SPD summary of plan material modifications.

The following is a list of notices required to be provided to plan participants of group health plans: Notice of special HIPAA enrollment rights, notice of special CHIPRA enrollment rights, notice of HIPAA pre-existing condition exclusions, notice of <a title="Women's Health and Cancer Rights Protection" href="Life as it is presents us with surprises, good and bad.

The Folsom Cordova Unified School District Liaison for Homeless Services has informed Project 680 of a big need for hooded sweatshirts (otherwise known as “hoodies”) for the homeless students in the FCUSD. Therefore, Project 680 will be holding a hoody drive from September 27-October 27, 2010. Kids like zipper front hoodies (see photo), so that is what we will be collecting. We are asking for NEW (not used) zip-front hoodies in any color or size for kids in grades K-12. Hoodies can be in solid colors or can have graphics, as long as the graphics are school appropriate.

As the hoody drive rolls out in September 2010, we invite residents, churches, businesses and organization to get involved. We encourage locals to put out feelers to people they know, pick a goal for how many hoodies to collect, become a drop-off location, share about the hoody drive on Facebook, come to our finale party on October 27, and definitely enter the photography contest as a way to show your support for the hoody drive. Did we mention our goal is to collect 680 hoodies?

Project 680 is pleased to announce a partnership with The Rancho Cordova Post for the group’s hoody drive. The Post will be hosting images for our photo contest, which will go from September 10 to October 25, 2010. Each person can submit up to six photos during the contest. You must include “Project 680 Hoody Drive” or “project680.org” somewhere in the photo. When you take a photo (or groups of photos), email them to info@project680.org and we’ll get them online for you. Maybe you could make a sign, hold a piece of paper, write on your skin, or get a tattoo (uh, hopefully not). Be creative and show your support for P680. There are six photo categories, which include: neighborhood, kids, pets, creative, work and whackiest photo. The “kids” category is really designed for kids to actually take the photo too!!!

Judges will select winners from each category to have their photos displayed at Rancho Cordova City Hall on October 27, 2010 from 4:30-7:00pm at our celebration party. And of course we’ll buy you a hot chocolate too because all winners should drink hot cocoa. We welcome people of all ages and locations to enter the contest and show your support for the Hoody Drive. Visit www.ranchocordovapost.com/project680 to view all photo entries.

Advocating for local homeless students is something we can all do. In this case, it’s really about doing something very simple and practical – collecting hoodies. Together we can make a difference.

With school routines also comes sports, after school activities, hurried dinners and a general sense of chaos. Perhaps you work two jobs or are putting in extra hours at work.
With more recent innovations from Apple iOS, Google Android, and the Palm WebOS devices continue to become more intuitive and connected to the social networks that have grown in popularity.

In addition to the greater availability of information the “social” innovations makes the sharing of information through phones more fun. Pew Research also recently reported sharp increases in mobile internet usage. Their ongoing study of The Internet & the American Life showed that 59% of adults now access the internet through mobile phone or internet connections such as WiFi (see embedded chart).

Taking my own phone for example (pictured above). I have at any time 10 different apps to choose from (not including the web browser) that can either serve as a means of researching where I am, where I want to go, and sharing that information across the web. I can even instantaneously share about the type of experience I am having, and even include a photograph. This information can be easily shared across photo sharing websites, social networks, or on a review site like Yelp.

Recent announcements from Facebook, Google, and Yelp only further highlight the need for businesses to take control of their online presence. In fact the announcement last week from Facebook grants immediate location sharing ability to it’s over 500 million users. It used to be a choice whether a business had a website and an online presence. This is no longer the case. If your business has a storefront, and especially if you are a venue of any sort, you already have a listing on Yelp and Google, likely one on Foursquare, and will soon have one on Facebook.

These applications represent a tremendous opportunity for you to begin to listen to your customers and foster some meaningful interaction. It is encouraged first that businesses begin to search for where there may already be chatter about their business online. Then, formulate a strategy to listen, interact, and encourage others to participate. I wrote previously in Focus on Social Media and Your Business Could Miss the Mark outlining some tactics to deepen online relationship and drive foot traffic to your business. While it is important to not ‘hard sell’, lest your voice be filtered out, it is important to measure increases in loyalty and /or revenue. The very publication you are reading has a mobile app available for the iPhone.

Another recommendation would be to buy one of these devices and become a user yourself. Your personal use of the device and platform may lead to a greater understanding of your customers habits.

Regardless, businesses can no longer hide their heads in the sand, kick it old school, and pretend that a web strategy or social media is an option. Either way you will send a message; engaged and listening or checked-out and oblivious.

What are some examples of engaged businesses you have been impressed with? We would love to hear your stories. Especially of those that may be leveraging mobile platforms specifically. An offer on FourSquare or Yelp. What are your thoughts?

In attendance were CRPD officials, Councilmember Robert McGarvey, Supervisor Don Nottoli, and various CRPD Board Members as well as architects and construction representatives. This park has been long neglected, so it is a joy to see a revitalization occurring.

Residents in the White Rock area have been meeting with CRPD over the past several years and working hard to advocate for this park. We can rejoice in these improvements, but we can also be proud of the way we acheived these results too. We interacted with CRPD in a very cordial and cooperative spirit. We had very strong and emotional feelings about this park, but we sought to suspend judgment and work to get results.

Thank you CRPD, The City of Rancho Cordova, and White Rock / Cordova Towne area residents who made this day possible.

Are you behind on licensing your pets and missed the original June 30 deadline for amnesty? We have good news for pet owners in the unincorporated County. Now through Oct. 31, residents can license their pets without the $100 late licensing penalty.

Licensing your pet with the Sacramento County Shelter has many benefits. Did you know…
· Your licensed pet may be immediately returned to you at your house if they become lost by an Animal Control Officer
· If your licensed pet does enter the shelter, we can contact you immediately and you will not have to pay the $40 impound fee, if it is your pet’s first impound, as long as your pet is wearing it’s license tag.
· Your licensed pet will be held in the shelter for 10 days, instead of a standard 3 days for pets without a license.
· If your licensed pet has been injured, we will contact your personal veterinarian, if possible.
· At the sad time your pet dies or is in need of final arrangements, we can assist you with free or low cost services.
· Many dog parks, apartment complexes, boarding facilities and other public places require animals to be wearing a current license in order to be on premises.
· A valid license proves to Animal Control staff that your cat or dog is current on their vaccinations.
· It’s the law – Sacramento County ordinance requires that all cats and dogs living in the unincorporated County be current on their licensing.

Not only does licensing your pet provide you all the services noted above, but your license fee goes directly to supporting the County Animal Care Shelter which cares for 15,000 lost, abandoned and homeless animals each year. We also investigate hundreds of cases of animal abuse and neglect, offer low cost spay/neuter services to low-income County residents, provide no-cost pet food to homes in need through our Pet Pantry Program, and protect our community from dangerous animals.

Synthia A. Smith, a business executive, has been appointed to the Rancho Cordova Planning Commission by City Council Member Linda Budge. Smith fills the vacancy on the Commission that was created when Thomas Moe moved from the area. The term expires in December.

Smith is the founder and president of Cherish the Possibilities (CTP), a business and personal development coaching firm. She is a member of the Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, American Business Women’s Association, the Business to Business Referral Group, and the St. John Vianney School Board of Directors.

She earned a B.A. in Social Welfare/Sociology from California State University, Sacramento, and a M.S. in Organizational Development/Human Resource Management from Golden Gate University in San Francisco. She also earned a Leadership Development Certification from the University of Virginia – Darden School of Business in Charlottesville.

Smith grew up in Rancho Cordova and after a short career outside of the area, moved back to the City eight years ago and resides here with her 12-year-old daughter.

“Before owning my own business, I worked in numerous leadership and management positions for various Fortune 500 corporations which allowed me to develop the ability to become strategic minded, visionary, and detailed oriented which I believe will serve as an excellent foundation for being a Planning Commissioner,” she remarked.

The Rancho Cordova Planning Commission is vested with advisory and decision making functions found within the Zoning Code of the City. The group meets at 6 p.m. at City Hall on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month.
