
January is National Mentoring Month. It is the time each year to remember the importance of mentors, and the need for every child to have a caring adult in his or her life. To be a mentor, you don’t need special skills. You just need the ability to listen and offer friendship, guidance and encouragement to a young person.

The Operation Recognition program was adopted in October 2001 by the Sacramento County Board of Education to honor the contributions and sacrifices of individuals who missed completing high school to serve in the U.S. military (specifically World War II or the Korean War) or relocate to a World War II internment camp for Japanese American citizens. In 2005, the County Board of Education expanded the program to include veterans of the Vietnam War.

Friends and former colleagues of retired Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) Personnel Commissioner Clellan “Cy” Young attended a celebration Tuesday, October 19, when the SCOE Personnel and Business Services Building was dedicated officially in Mr. Young’s honor.

The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) is pleased to announce that it will coordinate the Gordon D. Schaber Mock Trial and Moot Court Program for the 2010–11 school year.
The Mock Trial competition simulates a trial-level proceeding in which students portray the roles of pre-trial counsel, prosecuting and defense attorneys, witnesses, court clerks, bailiffs, and jurors before a single presiding judge and two scoring judges. It includes courtroom art and courtroom journalism competitions.

The Sacramento area’s biggest annual “back to school” event takes place Wednesday, September 1st. Local school district officials, civic leaders, parents and students will gather to honor 15 individuals chosen as school district Teachers of the Year 2011. Two of those educators will be selected as Sacramento County Teachers of the Year 2011 and will advance to the statewide competition. California’s Teachers of the Year will be announced in November 2010.

However, fifty children with neuromuscular diseases will experience that dream at Sly Park Conservation and Environmental Education Center.

Every year in Sacramento County hundreds of students are expelled from school because of involvement in on-campus violence. Many of these instances of violence involve weapons. In order for these students to be readmitted to their schools, especially in cases reaching the court system, they must successfully complete a sanctioned violence prevention program. Project SAVE (Safe Alternatives and Violence Education) is one such program. It is a program that needs the public’s help and support.

New officers were elected at the July 6, 2010, meeting of the Sacramento County Board of Education.
The Board elected Trustee Harold Fong to serve as Board President. Mr. Fong, the previous Vice President, is a resident of the Pocket area of Sacramento County. He has served as Area 7 Trustee since June 2000. Mr. Fong is a Program Manager for the California Department of Health Care Services and previously served two terms as Board Vice President. He also has served as chair of the Policy Committee and on the Budget Committee. Area 7 represents the communities of Freeport, Fruitridge, Greenhaven, Meadowview, Oak Park, Parkway, Pocket, and portions of Airport, South Land Park, and Valley Hi.
