There are a number of reasons I like living in the Sacramento area. Aside from the generally fantastic weather, we’re fairly close to so many wonderful cities and attractions. I think skiing and snowboarding are even better if I can drive a couple hours home and not have to worry about shoveling snow or putting snow chains on my Jetta. One of my favorite weekend vacation locations is the Napa Valley and all the relaxation it has to offer. From the Riverwalk in Napa to the quaint shops and mud baths in Calistoga, I love it all.

Recently, I had the opportunity to spend some quality time with my mom aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train. If you haven’t had the chance to ride the train recently, you will be pleasantly surprised with both the impeccable service and delicious food served on both the lunch and dinner train rides.

The cars were made in 1915 and 1917 and have been restored to their natural charm and beauty. The dome car features domed windows and offers spectacular views of the surrounding wine country as well as a special menu specifically for dome car passengers.

There are three separate kitchens that prepare all of the food served on the train fresh. If you’ve ever been on a train, you can appreciate the skill necessary to walk, much less, cook, while riding the rails.

While the Napa Valley Wine Train’s nine cars can hold as many as 400 passengers, you’ll rarely find more than 300, to ensure the comfort of the riders. If you’re looking for an extra special way to celebrate that momentous anniversary, rehearsal dinner, family reunion or other group event, the Wine Train offers personal cars with the same attentive service you’ll find on their daily trips.

In addition to the three hour trip from Napa to St. Helena and back, passengers should check out the wine available for purchase at the train depot. The selection and prices are impressive, even for Napa Valley.

There are a number of spas specialty shops in downtown Napa and during the winter months and tourist off-season, many are offering specials and discounts. The Riverwalk has undergone a series of restorations and you will find a restaurant to satisfy just about any craving. Lucky for us, a trip to Napa Valley may be a relaxing day trip or much longer vacation.

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) Board of Directors has approved a $1.54 billion budget. The 2011 budget provides funding for all programs, projects and initiatives needed to meet the strategic targets set by the SMUD Directors, while cutting costs without compromising customer service.

The lagging economy has figured prominently in the budget, which anticipates a $42 million drop in electricity sales. This would bring the cumulative shortfall since September 2009 to $97 million. The budget also assumes that the number of customers participating in the low-income discount rate is expected to grow to about 111,500 in 2011. That will require a subsidy of $38 million.

The budget also covers many increases in operation costs, including long-term power contracts, natural gas purchases and regulatory fees, as well as labor and employee benefits costs. Since even before the financial crisis of 2008, SMUD has been making every effort to protect customers through aggressive cost containment in all discretionary areas of the budget, including reducing anticipated spending to cover rising costs and the revenue shortfall. Changes are also being implemented to make operations more efficient, including:

· Streamlining SMUD operations, plus savings from smart meters will reduce the 2011 budget by $9 million.

· Rigorous vetting of spending, which contributed to $35 million in reductions in the capital budget.

· Using grant funds to leverage efforts supporting the Compact with the Customer and Sustainable Energy initiatives.

The 2011 budget is balanced. It projects a net income increase of $8.1 million, which will be sufficient to maintain SMUD’s strong credit rating and the ability to borrow money at reasonable interest rates. Some of the strategic highlights in the spending plan for next year include:

· Completion of smart-meter installations by the end of 2011.

· More than $53 million to replace or modernize aging infrastructure.

· Replacement of equipment for improved customer service.

· $186 million for construction of Solano Wind Phase 3, which will add 128 megawatts of wind generation.

· Funding incentives for the addition of 13.6 megawatts of new solar capacity to meet SB1 guidelines.

· Installation of more than 100 electric-vehicle charging stations in Sacramento County.

SMUD is using existing staff to work on federal and state grants that will benefit customers in areas including smart grid, electric transportation, energy storage and energy efficiency. The largest grant project, the smart grid infrastructure grant, will develop the foundation for a smart grid to enhance customers’ ability to manage their energy usage and costs. SMUD will have the equivalent of 150 full-time employees dedicated to the smart grid project. Forty percent of those labor costs will be reimbursed by the grant. The budget includes all of the expenditures SMUD expects to make for grant projects next year, but it does not include reimbursements from the federal and state governments. However, grant revenue has been included in the budgeted net income.

Other utilities in California and across the nation have raised rates or are planning to raise rates in response to factors resulting from the ongoing economic recession. SMUD customers continue to pay significantly less for electricity than most Californians and at least 25 percent less than residential customers who are supplied by neighboring PG&E. SMUD provides electric service to Sacramento County and a small portion of Placer County.

Comparison of California Utilities
Annual Average Residential Electric Bills
750 kWh per month
Effective as of September 1, 2010

SMUD- $88.75
Roseville Electric- $100.28
L.A. Dept. of Water & Power- $100.68
PG&E- $120.83
San Diego Gas and Electric- $128.83
Southern California Edison-$129.16

I love Thanksgiving. I love the turkey and cranberry sauce. I love watching “It’s a Wonderful Life” with the family in our pajamas as we recover from a delicious dinner and one too many slices of pie. I might blame the turkey, but it’s really a plot to get the most out of Black Friday that makes me snuggle into bed just after the sun goes down. This year, Black Friday ads assure me that it will be worth it.

Folsom Premium Outlets are kicking off Black Friday as soon as possible. That’s right. The outlets will be open at midnight on Friday. In fact, many stores are opening at 10 p.m. For a list of stores, hours and deals, check out theofficial website.

Kohl’s holds a special place in my heart. They have great sales and getting the discounts in the mail and in my inbox just plain makes me happy. Local stores are opening at 3 a.m. and you can build your Black Friday shopping list online. Plus, you will get $10 in Kohl’s Cash for every $50 spent. Does anyone else think it’s wonderful that the good people at Kohl’s are paying us to shop?

Perhaps you’ve seen the commercials with the determined, athletic woman in a red sweat suit preparing for Black Friday at Target. While few share that kind of enthusiasm, Target’s Black Friday ad is worth mentioning. There have been whispers amongst Black Friday bloggers that this sale should be impressive. While it hasn’t been released in its entirety yet, you can sign up here to be one of the first to know when it is released.

Walmart is scheduled to open at 5 a.m. and will be offering special prices on electronics from 5 till 11 a.m. On Walmart’s website you can not only find your local ad, but also check out the store map for optimum efficiency Friday morning. There will be online-only specials on clothing, toys, and electronics starting at midnight.

Sunrise Mall is opening its doors at 4 a.m. JC Penney hasn’t released their Black Friday sales yet, but are offering a sneak peak online. You can find the Macy’s ad and make an online shopping list here. Sears is ahead of the game and is offering Cyber Monday prices online now. If you’re not up for running from store to store in the wee hours of Friday morning, consider staying home and doing a little holiday shopping with a steaming mug of hot chocolate (or your drink of choice).

Remember to stay safe while shopping on Black Friday and for the rest of the holiday season. If there are other Black Friday specials you’d like to share, feel free to leave the information as a comment.

BounceU might be new to Rancho Cordova, but owner Josephine Suryono knows the importance of food drives. Located at 11280 Sanders Drive in Rancho Cordova and 7611 Galilee Road in Roseville, BounceU, will be hosting a series of food drives called Kids Feeding Kids. The first will be this Friday, November 19 in Rancho Cordova, followed by events on November 29 and 30 in Roseville.

During the BounceU Kids Feeding Kids food drives, kids will be able to enjoy one hour at the party place filled with huge bounce houses and inflatable slides for only $1 if they bring in two non-perishable food items. There is no limit, however, to the amount that can be donated. Families are encouraged to give as much as they can to support food banks.

“It’s great education and a great experience for the kids”, says Suryono

The event in Rancho Cordova will benefit River City Food Bank. <ins datetime="2010-11-16T19:45:49+00:00">River City Food Bank’s</ins> building was destroyed by a four alarm fire on October 21, 2010 and any help is much appreciated.

Reservations are required and space is limited to first come, first served.

BounceU will also be selling raffle tickets to win a free BounceU party and bounce passes. All proceeds of the raffle will benefit River City Food Bank. In addition, BounceU will donate $10 from every party booked by December 31 to River City Food Book. Remember to mention Kids Feeding Kids to also receive $15 off the total cost of the party.

Weekend activities include the Folsom Renaissance Faire, Octobeerfest and Target's Family Concert.

There are plenty of events to attend this weekend in the Sacramento area. Whether you’re interested in eating, drinking and general merriness or would like to take the family to a kid-friendly concert featuring the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra and Sacramento’s B Street Theatre, there are options for just about everyone.

There’s something about damsels in distress and grown men wearing leotards and jousting each other off horses. If you’re interested in all things Renaissance Faire or just really enjoy those delicious smoked turkey legs, make sure to visit the 2010 Folsom Renaissance Faire on Saturday and Sunday, October 16 and 17th at Folsom’s Lions Park.

Aside from the amazing aerial displays and the stunning performances, the California Capital Airshow has so much more to offer the community. From scholarship opportunities for local youth to giving back to local organizations through the concessions, the airshow is truly community based. The California Capital Airshow is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to sending students with an interest in aeronomics and aviation to college. Darcy Brewer, executive director of the airshow, says the four month long process awards students scholarships based on grades, essays, and references from school and the community. This year, 40% of the students awarded scholarships were women. Bewer’s excitement for the students is contagious when she says, “That’s what we (the airshow) were designed for”.

Despite what many would think about an event of this caliber, parking is a breeze. Did you know that Mather Field has one of the largest ramps in the Western United States? Combine that with some creative organizing, and a phenomenal Public Safety and Transportation Committee and you’ll enjoy one of the most stress free parking experience you’ll find at an event this size. Priority Parking, the group that runs the parking program for the airshow, hires young people from Civil Air Patrol and ROTC from the local community. It’s nice to know that your parking fee is helping to pay for the education of potential future aviators.

You might also be surprised to know that on the Friday before the show, there is a special practice run that is open only for special needs children from around the Sacramento area. This year, more than 2,000 kids from local children’s hospitals, the Children’s Miracle Network, Shriners, and United Cerebral Palsy will enjoy a private show. Afterwards, the performers will have lunch with the children and sign autographs.

This year, be sure to check out the concessions. Everyone working concessions are part of local charities working for a per diem that will be donated to their organization or charity. In total, there will be 30 local groups. “Just think”, Brewer said, “every time you purchase a lemonade or a soda pop, you’re giving back to the community”. As an added bonus, concession prices are lower this year to make the airshow an affordable family friendly event.
