To all of our readers, contributors, advertisers, fans and followers we want to extend a sincere thank you for three and a half years of sharing news, announcements, and events with you. At the end of January 2011 we will be signing-off for good. Due to the current economic conditions and marketplace we will no longer be able to continue publishing our daily news and events information for Rancho Cordova and beyond.

It has truly been our pleasure sharing stories with you and helping to connect the community. We hope you’ve enjoyed our hyperlocal online news service and encourage you to stay connected to other local online outlets. It has been a memorable experience for all of us as we’ve shared good times and bad, high points and low. We believe we have forged a new path for local news and community engagement we hope will spread throughout the region. There are good signs it has already begun.

The best way to close is goodbye and thank you, we’ll see you soon.

Local, Local, Local has been the media’s mantra the past year. While traditional media outlets have been dealing with the decline in ad revenues and shrinking subscriber bases, the big Digital Media companies like AOL, Yahoo, Facebook, and others have been trying to conquer local. Many big and well known Internet companies such as Google, Twitter, Foursquare and others are fighting for the local online space and the revenue that can come from it. Some are focused on first growing an audience while others are tackling the online revenue side with new types of advertising or marketing. All I can say is it’s getting crowded online.

Since starting in September of 2007 as a neighborhood blog before there was a name (hyperlocal) for what we were doing, we’ve gone through a number of changes, experimented a little bit, and learned a lot. The original concept for starting to write about the local community was never to make a truckload of money. It was a means to learn from, share with, and connect people with their community. If we could make it a sustainable endeavor through advertising or otherwise then that’s ideal. Good thing I found the perfect person to help cultivate and grow the effort. Michelle Ventress our Editor has been instrumental is making this vision a reality. Thank You!

Along the way we’ve learned a ton about the people, places, and organizations in Rancho Cordova and beyond. We’ve shared local news, events, and info with a lot of people (see below). In our day-to-day activity and through major events and through many community organizations from Neighborhood Associations to Neighborhood Watch, Cordova Community Council, to the Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce we have connected with those that live, work and play in our amazing city. It’s been a blast and well worth every minute.

Over the past three years many exciting things have happened and we’ve been blessed to share them with you all. I won’t go into detail here about every big story, community event, or surprise along the way. I’ll just say if you’ve been following our news and events for some time, you know what they are. If you haven’t, everything is archived by year, month, date and topic and still available to read on our site.

Now, that was a long build up to say it’s been a challenging year for all Americans. I don’t have to list off the difficulties most all of us have faced or been impacted by with housing, employment, illness or tragedy. I’m an optimist and am always trying to see the brighter side of any situation. Well, here’s the good news from my perspective about our hyperlocal experiment after three years.

In the past year alone, we’ve gone from covering one city to three cities and their surrounding communities. We’ve written or had contributions about the local community of over 1,176 stories from 250+ different people or organizations . We have also amazingly had over 77,092 people visit our local websites at least one time in the past year. While not the numbers of a major metro daily, it’s impressive for a small little news operation. That last figure shocked me and even if it’s a little inflated due to technical Internet stuff it’s still a fairly large number for a local online news site. In addition to our on site numbers, our stories now have the potential to reach a Sacramento region audience of over 2 million people a month through partnerships with Sacbee and News10. Amazing!

All of this to say it’s been a fantastic ride. Thank you for taking part. We appreciate your contributions, comments, tips, and suggestions. While we have yet to figure out the key to making this hyperlocal effort a sustainable and growing, money wise, endeavor we do believe we have accomplished our original vision to learn from, share with, and connect people with their community. We hope you’ll continue to stay informed, get involved, and make a difference in your community.

Last Friday was the deadline for candidates to file to run for Rancho Cordova City Council. After the filing deadline at 5pm on August 6th we announced the four candidates who had filed their paperwork to run and were cleared by Sacramento County as registered voters and residents of the City of Rancho Cordova.

Two of the candidates may be well known to you as they have served on the City Council for the past 8 years. Linda Budge and Dan Skoglund are seeking re-election for another 4 year term. The two challengers Wayne Hart and Paul Tassinari are relative unknowns, however today we’ll introduce you to one of them. On Monday we profiled Paul Tassinari. Today we profile Wayne Hart.

Wayne Hart is a Program Manager for Blue Shield of California. Prior to this position he worked as a Project Manager for VSP in Rancho Cordova for 13 years. He’s a 10 year resident of the City of Rancho Cordova and lives in the Stonecreek neighborhood with his wife Stacy and 9 month old son Hayden. Wayne and his wife are expecting another child soon.

Wayne grew up and went to High School in Orangevale at Casa Roble in the San Juan school District. He graduated from Sacramento State in 2000 with a degree in Business Finance. He told us he is involved in Toastmasters and is active in his church. Mr. Hart has never run for or held public office before, but felt now was the time to get involved. He states, “There has been no change in the City Council since incorporation (almost) 8 years ago. It’s time for a new voice on the Council.”

When asked why he was running for City Council he stated, “to be more responsive, to show more transparency.” He told us he would like to encourage more businesses to locate in the City and took issue with the fact that there is still no grocery store south of Highway 50, despite many homes and residents living there.

In the upcoming weeks we will also ask the candidates to answer questions about their experience, qualifications, and interests related to running for Rancho Cordova City Council. If you have specific questions for the candidates, ask them here in the comments, or send us an e-mail at editor @ ranchocordovapost.com.

The Walgreens store at 4050 Sunrise Blvd. near the Anatolia neighborhood in Rancho Cordova is celebrating its 1st birthday on August 14th. To celebrate, the store is having a carnival August 14th at Eagles Nest Park from 11 to 3 pm. They will be joined by Jamba Juice and will have things like hot dogs, snow cones, cotton candy, kids games, face painting, children’s ID pictures & more. We covered the Walgreens Grand Opening last year.

Chris Green, manager of Walgreens, stated, “We expect 8-10 booths selling everything from popcorn to root beer floats to raise money. Our goal over the year is to raise $25,000 for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.” When asked about his experience opening the store in Rancho Cordova he said, “Walgreens is happy they took the chance to be the first retailer to open on this corner. Usually, we are the last store to open on a corner and the retail center is already fully developed.”

Chris shared that the experience of opening the store in the Anatolia neighborhood of Rancho Cordova has been very positive and this store is one of top non twenty-four-hour stores in the area. It’s also number one in the region for ice cream sales and sells 500 gallons of milk each month week.

Over the past year the store has added fresh produce including bananas, strawberries, apples oranges, mangoes, and cantaloupes as well as Fresh Express salads. They have added two propane sales racks and wiring is now being completed for a Redbox automated movie rental kiosk to be installed later this month.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Walgreens is the flagship sponsor of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for 2010.

Last week was the deadline for candidates to file to run for Rancho Cordova City Council. After the filing deadline at 5pm Friday, August 6th we announced the four candidates who had filed their paperwork to run and were cleared by Sacramento County as registered voters and residents of the City of Rancho Cordova.

Paul Tassinari, 44 years old, is a longtime resident of the Rancho Cordova area. He was born at Mather Air Force Base and raised in Rancho Cordova. His father was a 24 year veteran of the Air Force who served at Mather Field. Paul and his wife Rohana and two sons Adam and Amir live in the Meadows neighborhood North of Folsom Blvd. Except for a 3 year period from 1995-1998 where Paul lived in Malaysia, where he met his wife, he has lived in Rancho Cordova. Paul attended Cordova Gardens, Mitchell Middle School and graduated from Cordova High in 1984. His two boys Amir and Adam, currently attend Cordova Gardens and Mitchell Middle School. They are in the 6th and 8th grade classes there.

Paul describes himself as a stay at home dad who is a Board Member of the Rancho Cordova Little League, is involved in the RCPD PAL program, a BloodSource blood donor, active parent in Boy Scout Troop #363, a volunteer at both boys’ schools, a volunteer for the VA Hospital lunchtime reading program, and a volunteer handyman for the Grange Hall where the Boy Scout meetings are held.

When asked he’ll tell you that he wants Rancho Cordova to be a place where kids have safe recreational opportunities and seniors have activities to keep them active, like Bingo. He believes Gold River, despite their own beliefs, is Rancho Cordova and should be in the City of Rancho Cordova boundaries. He wants more activities for kids in Rancho Cordova like a bowling alley, movie theater, baseball batting cages etc. Otherwise, he says, “they’ll be writing on the walls.”

Paul has never run for or held public office before. He explains his campaign as a grassroots effort as he walks neighborhoods and asks residents what they want for Rancho Cordova. He stated that he doesn’t plan to raise much money for his campaign to buy yard signs etc. because, “there are better things people can do with their money”, he said. Paul has four older brothers and sisters who grew up in Rancho Cordova and as a longtime resident believes people who have lived in Cordova for a while will know the name Tassinari.

We will be continuing our series of Meet the Candidates later this week with a profile of Wayne Hart, the other challenger for the Rancho Cordova City Council. In the upcoming weeks we will also ask the candidates to answer questions about their experience, qualifications, and interests related to running for Rancho Cordova City Council. If you have specific questions for the candidates, ask them here in the comments, or send us an e-mail at editor @ ranchocordovapost.com.

Friday, August 6th at 5pm was the deadline for candidates for City Council in Rancho Cordova to file their paperwork to run for office. According to Rancho Cordova City Clerk Mindy Cuppy four residents have filed to seek office in the Fall on November 2, 2010. There are two open seats up for election on the city council this year. The other three seats will be up for election in 2012.

Incumbents Dan Skoglund and Linda Budge are both up for re-election in 2010 and are running again this year to be elected for four-year terms. In addition two challengers have filed to run for the opportunity to unseat one or both of the incumbents. Paul Tassinari and Wayne Hart have filed papers to run for the two open council seats. All candidates must be 18 years of age, a Citizen of the United States, and a registered voter residing within the city limits to run.

Council Members are currently paid a monthly stipend of $500.00. Regular city council meetings are held on the first and third Mondays of each month at 5:30 p.m. Special or adjourned city council meetings may be held as needed. The Mayor is appointed every year on a rotational basis by the City Council. Rancho Cordova has 28,437 Registered Voters as of October 28, 2008.

At this time not much is known about the two challengers. Over the upcoming weeks and months we will be featuring profiles of all the candidates and will have Q & A sessions with them to learn more about their experience and qualifications for office and what they hope to accomplish as your next city council members.

Council Member Dan Skoglund was appointed to fill a vacancy on the City Council in 2004 to finish out the term of the late Dave Roberts.
Dan has lived in Rancho Cordova since 1975. He was a member and Vice Chair of the City’s first Planning Commission. He has served as a president for many organizations, including the Rancho Cordova Rotary Club, the Cordova Community Council, the Active 20/30 Club, and the Sacramento chapter of the Professional Moving Association.

He has been a Relocation Consultant for California Moving Systems for 28 years. He is a graduate of Sacramento High School and attended Sacramento City College, majoring in engineering. He and his wife, Pamela, have two sons.

Council Member Linda Budge was elected to the first City Council when the City incorporated in 2003 and re-elected in November 2006. She served as Mayor in 2004 and 2008 and as Vice Mayor in 2007 and Mayor Pro Tempore in 2002/03.

Gold River, CA – Congressman Dan Lungren (R-CA) issued this statement upon hearing of the death of Sen. Dave Cox:

“Sen. Dave Cox was a giant public servant in the body of a humble man. He served the people of Sacramento and California with everything he had. He was always accessible, always willing to listen. The constituents we shared will miss him greatly and I will miss a great friend,” said Lungren (R-CA), who had just returned to Washington D.C. Tuesday when he learned the news of Cox’s death. “I had a brief but wonderful conversation with him a few weeks ago. He was working to the very end. He gamely told me that he was at ‘90 percent.’ And I told him that 90 percent of Dave Cox is better than 100 percent of most people. I had a funny feeling it might be our last conversation.”

In November 1996, voters approved Proposition 215, which legalized the cultivation and possession of marijuana in California for medicinal purposes. Notwithstanding this initiative, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2005 that federal authorities could continue to prosecute California patients and providers engaged in the medicinal cultivation and use of marijuana for violations of federal law. However, the U.S. Department of Justice announced in March 2009 that it would no longer prosecute marijuana patients and providers whose actions are consistent with state medical marijuana laws.

Placed on the November 2, 2010 ballot in California is a new proposition, Proposition 19 would; (1) legalizes various marijuana-related activities, (2) allows local governments to regulate these activities, (3) permits local governments to impose and collect marijuana-related fees and taxes, and (4) authorizes various criminal and civil penalties.

Today, we’re pleased to reveal to you, our amazing loyal, readers, a new site design and some awesome additional features we hope you’ll love. We redesigned the site to improve navigation, present more valuable information, and add new functionality that you have been asking for. The overall theme of the redesign is providing access to more local information through a marketplace, job listings, forums, polls, maps, mobile app, and forms for feedback.

Shopping Local

Let me start off by saying that we know times are tough financially and with this in mind we have provided access to many value added services. Our partnership with ShopCity.com continues to grow and we have integrated more links to our ShopRanchoCordova.com local marketplace. Here you’ll find local business info, products and services for sale, money saving coupons, digital gift certificates, free classified ads and you’ll be able to read and write reviews of your favorite local businesses. Try it out today and if you own a business in the community, go ahead and claim your free business profile.

Getting Back to Work

Many people are currently out of work or underemployed. We can’t create enough jobs to put you all back to work, but we can provide job listings for the local area. We’ve teamed with Simply Hired to provide a local Rancho Cordova Job Board where you can search and find jobs from local employers. Local businesses can post their open positions on the job board for a small fee of $50 for 90 days. We can even create job listing packages for employers looking to hire multiple employees over the next couple months or year. Ask us for more info.

Discuss Neighborhood Issues

We know neighbors like to discuss issues and find solutions to problems not covered in the media. Many local groups use e-mail or other systems to stay informed. We wanted to provide an outlet for your ideas and discussion. In order to do this, we teamed up with the Tomato Pages Network to bring you the MyRanchoCordova.com forums. Use the forums to discuss neighborhood issues, share ideas and more. We hope this provide a convenient local outlet for discussion and sharing.

Talk Back and Share

In the early days back in 2007, we ran a lot of polls. We asked questions and got answers as one local TV station uses now in their tag line. Well, we have a lot of data stored from those polls which you might find interesting. It never occurred to us before to share that wealth of data in its entirety until now. If you visit the Polls page we have all of our previous poll results archived for you to browse. Some of it is interesting, some just trivial- but useful maybe. We will also be running more polls from here on out. I’m a numbers person and I’d bet many of you out there are too. I find it fascinating to look at numbers and try to make sense of what they mean. Hopefully this will be a treasure trove of interesting data as time goes by.

Local Maps Around Town

Web based mapping has been around for some time now and a few years back mashups were all the rage. Mashups combined web based apps with useful data creating an entirely new application. We’ve taken that concept and are building out local web maps with interesting data points for you to explore. We started with two, garage sales and parks, and will be adding more maps showing unique and interesting parts of the local community. These maps are completely free to view and add info to, just contact us. If you can think of a useful web map for us to include let us know.

Mobile – On the Go

This isn’t a site redesign topic, but worth mentioning anyway. If you missed the big announcement or were not involved in the 4th of July parade or celebration at Hagan park then you may not know we now have a Rancho Cordova Post iPhone App available for download to your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Our goal with this new app was to provide most of our great hyperlocal info while you’re on the go. The app includes our news and Twitter feeds, Facebook fan page, event listings, local mobile coupons, and a handy form to contact us called iPost.

iPost – Send us Your Stories, Events, Photos

For some time now we’ve been asking for your stories and community contributions. We’ve even had a form to send in your stories to us, but today we’re taking it a step further. Now you’ll be able to send us stories, event listings, and photos with easy to use forms on our website and news tips from our iPhone app. We’re calling this iPost and we hope you’ll get in the habit of sending us all the good stuff happening locally. We want your neighborhood and organization news as well as your local photos and news tips no matter how minor. We enjoy a strong collaborative relationship with the community and our readers and our goal is to only strengthen that with convenient and easy to use tools to report what’s happening right near you.

We do hope you’ll like all the new features and our new design. Sometimes change can be difficult, but in the end change brings us new opportunities that never existed before. So please take advantage of all our hard work and start using our new tools and features to explore the best of Rancho Cordova like never before.

The Sacramento media scene has a long and colorful history which dates back to before I was born. I’m one of the thirty-something’s who grew up using computers from an early age, but only moved to Sacramento in 1995. Innovative publications like Alive & Kicking by legendary music promoter Jerry Perry and Prosper Magazine supported by Michael Teel, CEO of local supermarket giant Raley’s, have had a tough go staying viable in the Sacramento market. While others like Sactown Magazine by Rob Turner and Elyssa Lee and Sacramento Press by Ben Ilfeld and Geoff Samek have found a business model and loyal audience for their local content. Still others have been publishing for decades and continue to survive despite the downturn in the economy, but for how long.

You might notice that theses publications have all taken varying approaches to producing content with a mix of distribution channels. The comparison/contrast was intentional. While print is not the same as digital, good content is the common factor among all publications. The differentiator of success between the publications mentioned has been the business model for supporting content production and distribution. The goal of this commentary is not to argue the merits of one business model or the other, rather to make a larger point.

Is Sacramento poised to become a Digital Media Hot Spot or Dead Zone?

Before diving into what we “The Media” should be doing I’d like to highlight a couple reasons I think there is a growing opportunity for a Digital Media Hot Spot here in Sacramento.

1. The McClatchy Company, owner of the Sacramento Bee is the third-largest newspaper company in the United States and is based right here in Sacramento, Ca. They recently developed a content sharing network called Sacramento Connect to work with local blogs and news providers and have received national attention for it.

2. Innovative digital media startup Sacramento Press is making waves nationally with an online-only news model with over 1,000 community contributors and recently launched a first in the country local ad network named SLOAN to financially support local publishers.

3. Over 300,000 listeners tune into classical, jazz, news and public affairs programming each week on one of Capital Public Radio’s 7 stations serving California’s Central Valley and the Sierra Nevada. In addition, Public radio and television have kicked off an ambitious effort to develop a digital distribution network that will allow public broadcasters and web producers to combine, create, share and distribute their news and cultural content.

4. Innovative local companies like Intel, HP, Apple, JiWire, MOBSpree, BKWLD and others provide a strong base of tech talent and resources to foster a growing digital media cluster in the Sacramento region.

5. Education institutions like Sacramento State, The Art Institute, and International Academy of Design and Technology provide solid programs for new talent to learn how to work in a digital world.

There are many more reasons Sacramento is poised to become a Digital Media Hot Spot but rather than provide a laundry list of “Why Could’s” let’s explore some of the benefits.

First and foremost, Jobs! This region badly needs jobs and it’s clear there is a bright future in digital media. Looking at recent success stories of Facebook, Twitter, and now Foursquare it’s evident that new economy jobs will be in harnessing the digital economy and we’re just on the first step in a journey miles long.

The recent success of the iPhone, iPad, and Android mobile devices tells us in addition to the web that this is the decade of mobile computing. Yes, all the recent innovation has been around mobile and location based services.

With major media companies like AOL entering the hyperlocal market with a $50 million investment in Patch, Demand Media pumping out huge amounts of content and talking IPO, and Yahoo’s recent acquisition of Associated Content it’s abundantly clear and Google reminds us with every search that content is king on the web. The point here is there are thousands of jobs available in these emerging industries and our region should recognize this and capitalize on it.

Secondly, greater investment in our regional economy. We have a strong and growing Clean Tech sector and an emerging Med Tech cluster yet add to that a Digital Media focus and we, as a region, can really put Sacramento on the map. The world is increasingly a global economy and to compete at the international level each region will need to communicate their value proposition and highlight their assets. Sacramento is often skipped over for more worldly cities like San Francisco or Los Angeles. Of course we’re not the Silicon Valley or Hollywood, but we could become the Hot Spot for Digital Media. Why not?

If it seems that this article is scattered and jumps to a number of disconnected points you’re correct. As a region we have yet to connect the dots on this opportunity. There are isolated initiatives here and there, but no coherent plan or organizing of efforts. To foster the type of Digital Media Hot Spot of which I envision requires collaboration, coordination, and cooperation across many sectors and industries. This article is just a starting point for discussion in a broader sense of how our region can capture this opportunity sitting on our doorstep. I’d encourage media outlets and individuals to comment and share their own perspectives.

Generally, collaboration, coordination, and cooperation among competitors is really hard. However, consider this one point. If we as a region don’t foster this effort someplace else will. Then who’s our competition? Not the media company across town. The media cluster across the country who does “Get It” will steal away Fortune 500 companies, talent, investment, skilled workers. Let’s not let what happened to Detroit happen here. Before our aging industrial age local economy slowly withers away we need to grow our information age economy and compete in this digital media age.

Kansas City, Missouri—The National Civic League announced the winners of the 61st annual All-America City award during a raucous celebration at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center in Kansas City. The crowds cheered loudly as, one by one, delegations from the ten winning communities streamed onstage to accept their awards.

Listed in alphabetical order by state, the 2010 All-America Cities are:

Chandler, Arizona

Lynwood, California

Rancho Cordova, California

North Miami, Florida

Acworth, Georgia

Des Moines, Iowa

Salisbury, Maryland

Gastonia, North Carolina

Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

El Paso, Texas

The 61-year old awards program recognizes neighborhoods, villages, towns, cities, counties and metro regions for outstanding civic accomplishments. To win, communities have to demonstrate an ability to address serious challenges with innovative, grassroots strategies that promote civic engagement and cooperation between the public, private and nonprofit sectors.

“These All-America Cities represent what is working in American communities,” said National Civic League President Gloria Rubio Cortés. “They are taking on challenging issues and finding innovative ways of creating a better future. We are inspired by their stories every year.”

To qualify for the award, communities submit a detailed application listing three examples of successful community-based problem-solving. This year’s winners addressed such issues as homelessness, obesity, economic development, low income housing, improving schools and diversity and inclusion.

“This is the best that is going on in the country,” said AAC Jury foreperson Sharon Metz, a former mayor of an All-America City, when asked about the winners’ community projects. “It’s all the issues we talk about and read about in the news—energy, healthcare, jobs, programs for youth and children—only these people are doing more than talking. They are getting busy and working to solve these challenges. They change their communities, and little by little, they are changing the country.”

Underwriting the All-America City Awards this year was the Sprint Foundation. The sponsors were MWH Global, Gay and Lesbian Fund of Colorado, Burns & McDonnell, Hyatt Regency Crown Center in Kansas City, Southwest Airlines – The Official Airline of the All-America City Awards, Carl and Lily Pforzheimer Foundation, KPMG, NECA/IBEW Power Partners, Southern California Edison, City of Kansas City, Missouri, City of Gladstone, Missouri, State Farm, and LSC Transportation Consultants.

This year, boosters back home followed the action by watching live-streaming of the Kansas City event courtesy of Free Speech TV, another Denver-based nonprofit, and egging on their neighborhoods and fellow townspeople through a live chat feature, Twitter and Facebook.

Excitement was also generated by a side event in which communities produced videos telling their community stories and showcasing their efforts to promote civic engagement and solve local problems. Members of the public voted in the tens of thousands to back their favorite videos on the AAC blog, www.allamericacityaward.com.

The All-America City Award is an honor achieved by more than 600 communities. Some have won the award multiple times. All-America Cities benefit by increasing community pride, networking with civic activists from across the country and gaining national recognition. The AAC designation has helped communities win grants and new resources and attract new employers.

NCL is a 116-year-old nonpartisan nonprofit organization that strengthens democracy by increasing the capacity of groups and individuals to participate in and build healthy and prosperous communities. NCL publishes the Model City Charter and the National Civic Review.

In addition to its publishing and award programs, NCL provides technical assistance through its Community Services program. Recent community-based projects have focused on fiscal sustainability, transportation-oriented development, environmental stewardship, racial equity and immigrant integration.

Mother’s Day is the one day a year dedicated to honoring moms and all that they do. Whether the mom in your life has been a mother for a few weeks or has great grandchildren to celebrate with, she deserves a break and a little something extra this Mother’s Day.

Homemade cards and flowers are always nice, but this year, consider treating Mom to a special meal where she can just relax and enjoy. At the Sacramento Marriott they take care of the details so you don’t have to. Their beautiful ballroom and live music provide the perfect ambiance to enjoy a great meal and make this Mother’s Day more memorable than the last. They are offering a full Champagne brunch for Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 9th, with the first seating at 10 a.m. and the last at 2p.m.

Their champagne brunch will include all of the traditional foods that make a mothers day brunch complete. For starters, there will be a full breakfast station with your regular breakfast items (pastries, bacon, sausage, eggs benedict, etc.) and omelettes and waffles cooked to order by one of the Marriott’s chefs. The buffet also features chef carved prime rib and ham, as well as a bountiful seafood display of prawns, snow crab, and smoked salmon. To round out the meal, there is a variety of fresh fruits and salads, assorted breads and dips, and a number of hot entrees and side dishes. If that isn’t enough, there will also be a dessert station filled with mini pastries and desserts.

With moms in mind, the Marriott has set out to make sure even the youngest members of the family enjoy the day. To help ensure a relaxing and enjoyable experience for moms, they’ve invited a special guest balloon artist to entertain and amaze the children. And although some children are very particular when it comes to food, fear not – even picky eaters will be pleased when they discover the children’s station which features favorites such as pizza, chicken tenders and tater tots.

While motherhood is often stressful and tiring, preparing for your Mother’s Day celebration doesn’t need to be. Treat Mom to something special this Mother’s Day. A relaxing, elegant brunch is a great way to tell her she’s loved and appreciated.

For more information or to make reservations contact the Sacramento Marriott at (916) 251-9955 or visit their website for all the details.

Publisher’s Corner

It’s been a year since I took the plunge, left my good paying job with benefits, and began the long journey towards the American Dream, during the worst economic downturn in decades no less. Well, we’re still alive and kicking as the saying goes and we have some fantastic news to share. It’s been a couple of months since my last update and it just felt like time to give you all, our amazing readers, a sneak peak at what we’ve been up to.

In March we launched our third publication, The Citrus Heights Herald. The Herald just like the RC Post covers local news, community events, and things to do in the Sacramento region. We were expanding our coverage to Neighbors sections and we heard your feedback. Keep the RC Post for Rancho! So, we’ve done just that. Now The Rancho Cordova Post covers Rancho Cordova, Mather, Rosemont, and Gold River. We still have a neighbors section which occasionally covers Folsom, however the majority of our coverage is on Rancho Cordova and the surrounding areas.

The all new Citrus Heights Herald was launched out of our realization that this city, older than Rancho Cordova, had no dedicated news coverage. In fact, the second largest group of our readers hail from this area. So we thought, let’s give them what they’re looking for – more local coverage of news, events, and things to do. Who could we find to help us with this ambitious expansion. Well, she was right under our nose. Michelle Ventress has moved on to lead the Citrus Heights Herald and grow our coverage of Citrus Heights, Carmichael, Orangevale, Fair Oaks and occasionally Arden Arcade. Michelle’s writing ability, outgoing attitude, and leadership made her a natural choice for the position and I’m confident she’ll do amazing things. Michelle Ventress can be reached at michelle@citrusheightsherald.com or (916) 879-1035. News tips, press releases, and general inquiries can be sent to editor@citrusheightsherald.com.

In addition to covering city council meetings, writing the crime report, pet of the week and many other top stories in Rancho Cordova over the past year Annie Lowe is a member of Leadership Rancho Cordova. Now, she can add Editor to her title as the new Editor of The Rancho Cordova Post. Annie has an energetic personality and a journalistic nose for the news. She started with us as an intern, then freelance writer, and was hired as Assistant Editor last year. She has proven herself as a strong journalist and dedicated community member. We’re thrilled she’ll be leading the RC Post as it continues to grow and become an integral part of the Rancho Cordova community. Annie Lowe can be reached at annie@ranchocordovapost.com or (916) 761-7440. News tips, press releases, and general inquiries can be sent to editor@ranchocordovapost.com.

Highway 50 is an integral part of the Sacramento economy, has a rich history, and is the gateway to the East. Six months ago we spun off our business news coverage in an experiment we called 50 Business. With a monthly e-mail newsletter, an interactive website, business events calendar, and feature stories about business, economic development, education, the arts and entertainment along the Highway 50 Corridor we believed we could provide a valuable news service and attract a new type of readership with in-depth conversations about the big issues facing the region. Interest in this type of news and our feature stories has grown and we’re pleased to announce a new freelance writer to our team. JT Long, an accomplished business writer, former Comstock’s Magazine Editor, and active member of the Sacramento Press Club will be writing a weekly feature story for 50 Business. We look forward to covering the 50 Corridor and welcome your feedback and story ideas. JT Long can be reached at jtlongandco@gmail.com or (916) 532-1232. News tips, press releases, business events, and general inquiries can be sent to editor@50business.com.

To round things up we have one more exciting announcement to make. Earlier this year we were contacted by the Sacramento Bee. They asked us to join them for a demo of a new service called Sacramento Connect. You may have noticed that toolbar at the bottom of our websites. Well, the Sacramento Bee has formed a content sharing network of local news sites and blogs and they asked us to join. Each member of the network installs an interactive toolbar which allows for content sharing via social media, e-mail etc. and includes functionality for chat. The connect part of Sacramento Connect includes a new button on the toolbar which shows four related stories from partners in the network. The network started with a handful of hand selected partner sites and continues to grow. You can see all the partners and their shared content on Sacramento Connect or just click on the button in the toolbar.

Thank you for reading and the many thoughtful comments and interesting stories from our Community Contributors. We’re here to educate, inform, and enlighten your day. Hopefully, we’ve moderately succeeded. Please send us your comments, questions, feedback, or ideas. We want to hear from you!
