Sacramento Animal Shelters Offer Free Cat Adoptions in June

June is national Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, and in recognition, the Sacramento SPCA, City of Sacramento Animal Care Services and Sacramento County Animal Care and Regulation are offering a special on cats one year-of-age and older.

June 9 – through June 30, the adoption fee on adult cats will be waived at all three shelters. Due to uncontrolled breeding, especially during the warmer spring and summer months, area shelters are overburdened with hundreds of kittens needing homes.  And because kittens are so appealing to many, adult cats tend to wait at shelters longer – unadopted.  There are many benefits to adopting an adult cat, including known personality traits, calmer dispositions, established litterbox habits, and none of the unpredictable behavior that comes with kittenhood.

To date this year, more than 9,000 homeless cats and kittens have been received by Sacramento’s three major animal shelters alone (Sacramento SPCA, City of Sacramento Animal Care Services, and Sacramento County Animal Care and Regulation).

There are an estimated 60 million homeless cats nationwide, and uncontrolled breeding is the cause.  A fertile female cat can produce three litters of kittens per year.  If just one cat and each of her offspring reproduce regularly, they can produce 420,000 kittens in just seven years.  Due to this overpopulation crisis, approximately 71% of cats and kittens entering shelters are euthanized annually.
