Race Not Over for Sheriff Candidates after Tight Elections Results

The race for Sacramento County Sheriff will not be over for Scott Jones and Jim Cooper until November, Sacramento County elections results suggest.

Neither of the two candidates managed to gather over 50 percent of voters in yesterday’s election, with candidate Scott Jones getting 46 percent of the votes and Jim Cooper getting 41 percent. Candidate Brett Daniels was a distant third with 11 percent of the vote and will not qualify for a November runoff.

Candidate Scott Jones released a statement once results were in saying that he is looking forward to the coming runoff between him and Cooper. “Our work is not done yet, but I am confident that after the November election, I will be elected Sacramento County Sheriff,” he said.

The November runoff could be the result of many voters choosing not to vote for any of the candidates on their ballot. Sacramento County reported over 19,000 ballots yesterday failed to choose a candidate for Sacramento County Sheriff, and that number exceeds the number of voters who cast their vote for candidate Bret Daniels.

Meanwhile, other positions that affect the Rancho Cordova area were decided quickly by voters.

Sacramento County Supervisor Don Nottoli maintained his seat on the Board of Supervisors with 70 percent of the vote; incumbent Doris Matsui will be challenged by Republican Paul Smith for the 5th district seat in the U.S. House of Representatives; incumbent Dan Lungren will face Democrat Ami Bera for the district 3 seat in the U.S House of Representatives; and Jack Sieglock will challenge incumbent Alyson Huber for her current position of State Assembly Member for the 10th district. Former Cordova High Principal Jacky Levy also won a seat on the County Board of Education for area 3 last night.
