County Animal Shelter Ramps Up Effort to Keep its Doors Open With Flea Market, Adoption Discounts

Budget discussions next week could result in deep cuts to the Sacramento County animal shelter, and the shelter is pulling out all stops to try to keep their services intact through community fundraising efforts.

The “Save Our Shelter” campaign was launched soon after preliminary budget figures showed a $1.9 million cut to the animal control and regulation department in April. The campaign originally focused on pet licensing amnesty to spur pet owners into purchasing pet licenses, and several community events were also put on to try to raise extra money. The shelter just announced two more attempts to fundraise: a half-off cat adoption event and a “flea market” on June 26.

To celebrate “Adopt a Shelter Cat Month,” the shelter is cutting their adoption price in half for adult cats through June 30. All cats one year and older qualify for the discount, and all cats are spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. Adoption prices normally start at $81 for cats.

The shelter will also be holding a “flea market” June 26 at their headquarters, located at 3839 Bradshaw Road, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Gently used items such as furniture, toys, electronics and pet products will be featured for sale at the event, and a raffle, bake sale and craft items will also be on site. Items can also be donated to the event– contact the shelter at (916) 361-7604 or saccountyshelterfleamarket@yahoo.comto schedule a pickup or dropoff for items.

If the shelter does not raise enough money to keep its services intact, the shelter will lose its volunteer program, 70 percent of its adoption program and medical care for shelter animals when the county’s budget is approved by the Board of Supervisors. The shelter reported 206 more licenses in May compared to 2009 since the launch of their campaign, and adoptions are up 47 percent for dogs and nearly 12 percent for cats over the same period.
