More RT Jobs and Services are on the Chopping Block
Many people in our community utilize regional transit for transportation to and from work and school. For many, RT is their only form of transportation. While some argue that for a community as large as the Sacramento area, our transit system should be thriving we find RT struggling. The state Employment Development Department could be cutting more jobs and subsequently services, next month. Sacramento Regional Transit District warned the state Employment Development Department that it could begin laying off employees as early as next month.
Sacramento RT has warned the state Employment Development Department that it could lay off 194 employees, nearly 20% of the RT workforce, by April 20th. Almost every position from customer service to mechanics to light rail service workers and more will be facing lay offs. According to the Employment Development Department, the cuts will include employees represented by the Amalgamated Transit Union and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
In the past two years, fares have been increased twice as the district tries to counteract decreasing tax collections. In June, RT will be cutting service in many areas as another attempt to cut costs. Please see the official RT website for the summary of service changes.
The Sacramento Regional Transit District will be hosting a meeting to discuss the upcoming changes at the Rancho Cordova City Hall at 4 p.m. on Monday, March 22. The public is invited to attend and voice their opinion.
