Sacramento SPCA Sees Record Adoption Numbers in 2009
The Sacramento SPCA, a shelter that provides animal services for Rancho Cordova, announced on Tuesday that 2009 proved to be a highly successful year for pets hoping to be adopted at their shelter.
A total of 6,059 pets were adopted out last year, eclipsing the previous record of 5,637 adoptions in 2008. The shelter also broke another record last year — more than 16,000 animals were spayed or neutered in 2009, breaking 2008′s record of 12,521 surgeries.
The shelter also saw record animal surrenders last year as well, and Director of Public Relations Lesley Kirrene said the economy could have impacted the surrender number. ”Two of the top reasons given for surrendering a pet to the SPCA in 2009 were ‘moving/foreclosure’ and an ‘inability to afford a pet,’” she said.
The Sacramento SPCA was established in 1894 and currently contracts with the City of Rancho Cordova to provide animal shelter services for the city’s residents. The shelter is located at 6201 Florin Perkins Road and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
