Restaurant Review: Los Cerros
Mexican food is one of my absolute favorite meals to have when it’s cold outside. Maybe it’s the warm, cheesy goodness that lulls me into semi-comfort. Or maybe it’s the spices that warm me up. Whatever it is, I’m a big fan of the stuff when winter rolls around.
I was excited to see Los Cerros come into Zinfandel Place. Especially because their marketing pieces tote them as serving “authentic Mexican food”; right up my alley. So, my husband and I stopped in for lunch to give them a try.
Since they’re in Zinfandel Place, their space is similar to what I mentioned in my review about Eat-a-Pita, the ceilings are incredibly high and open, which makes it noisy. And the first thing we noticed was how COLD it was inside the restaurant, which was terribly disappointing as we were hoping to escape the cold for a bit.
The service was fast and friendly, and the restaurant was very clean. We ordered lunch plates – I ordered a two beef tacos plate and my husband ordered a combo plate with a chicken burrito and chicken taco, both served with rice and beans. With drinks, our lunch came to just a hair over $20.00.
Again, we were impressed with how quickly our food arrived, especially because we were sitting there shivering while we waited and welcomed the hot food. I was also impressed that while they are a “fast food” restaurant, they served the food on real plates and silverware. I have a weird thing about using plastic utensils, but that’s another story for another day.
My husband quickly remarked at the portion size, that it was quite small. The sides of beans and rice looked like decent portions, but when we stuck our forks in them we realized they were just thin layers of a serving. And unfortunately, the beans were incredibly bland and watery.
We both agreed that the main entrees, the burrito and tacos were okay – in the sense that they were satisfying, but nothing special. Both of us enjoy spicy food, and neither was, and the salsa was disappointingly mild (even though it was marked ‘hot’).
All in all we decided that while it’s “okay” for a quick lunch, it’s not the “authentic Mexican food” we had hoped for. There are better places for that in town.
We also hope they fixed (or turned on) their heater. Whoo-boy, it was so cold in there and I would avoid it just on that alone – I actually ate faster than normal just so that we could escape the cold.

Thank you Barbara for your restaurant reviews. I live in Rancho Cordova and I am always looking for good local eateries. I agree with your review of Franco Café. Their Prime Rib Philly Cheese Steak is very tasty. Ike’s off Sunrise makes a good sandwich for lunch. It is one of my top lunch stops. The ham and cheese is my favorite and their chili is the best around. I would recommend a place to dine at but I have not found one in Rancho Cordova that made me want to come back.
Hi Brian – thank you for the kind feedback, I’m glad you’re finding the reviews helpful. I’ll have to try that sandwich you recommended at Franco’s, thanks. My husband has tried Ike’s and has raved about it as well, so I’ll have to try it and maybe do a review sometime soon – so you DID make a great recommendation!
Thanks again, and if you find somewhere else that you enjoy, please let me know!
Barbara, if you are looking for authentic Mexican food in Rancho, check out El Puerto at Folsom and Cordova Lane. They have the best food and great prices too.
Brian, where is the Franco Cafe?
Hi Patty – thank you so much for the recommendation! Yes, I’m a big fan of El Puerto, in fact I just had lunch there during the holiday break because I was craving their pork burrito! You are right – great food and great prices. The fabulous Marie Young wrote a great review about them this past summer: http://www.ranchocordovapost.com/2009/08/16/el-puerto-a-little-slice-of-mexico-rancho-cordova/
Thanks again, Patty!
Patty,
Franco Cafe address is 3320 Data Drive, Suite #150. It’s on the corner of Quality Drive and Data Drive. I’ll have to try El Puerto. Thanks for the recommendation.
Thanks Brian. I’ll try it. I’m always looking for lunch places in Rancho. And thanks Barbara for your reviews. They’re very helpful and highlight places we’d never know about!
