Rancho Resident You Should Know: Maryann Ly
Maryann Ly, 40, just took the leap of a lifetime: less than a week ago, Ly bought Marie Claire Salon on Sunrise Boulevard and officially entered the world of business ownership.
Ly has worked at the salon for over two years, and she seized the opportunity to buy the salon in December when the original owner decided she could not keep it any longer. Ly and another potential buyer vied for the salon, but the owner ultimately chose Ly to keep the salon in good hands.
“This morning she stopped by and she needed her nails done,” Ly said of the former owner. “I told her, ‘I know this shop is your dream, but you couldn’t make it and you let me take over. I’m going to make your dream come true.’ She was loving it.”
Ly, who lives in Anatolia and whose 14-year-old son attends Cordova High, has a lot of work ahead of her in her new role as business owner. Ly does not yet have money to renovate the salon, but she is planning on adding four hair styling stations to the salon, in addition to the four manicure stations and eight pedicure stations already in place.
In the meantime, Ly is focusing on more cost-effective changes, like cleaning and re-arranging her salon. “It’s a lot of work,” she said. ”Christmas weekend I was here, and New Years weekend I was here from 5:30 all the way to 9 or 10 o’clock. On New Year’s Eve, we were here all the way until 2 o’clock in the morning.”
Ly has come a long way since her family left Vietnam for the U.S. when she was 14; not only did she just buy a business, but she also got married last year on Sept. 9. The day turned out to be very popular for marriages, much to Ly’s dismay.
“We didn’t even know that that day was 9-9-9,” Ly said. ”When we got to the courthouse, we saw a limousine and Channel 10 News was there. We said, ’what the heck is going on?’ We tried to run away from the camera.”
Ly said she is looking forward to her new life as a businesswoman and wife, and she is hoping her gamble with Marie Claire Salon will pay off. She recently expanded the salon’s hours, now 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and will be staying open later during the summer. She also said she doesn’t mind coming in earlier than the salon’s scheduled hours for early bird customers. “It doesn’t matter to me — If you make the appointment, I’ll be there,” she said.
