2009 Local News in Review, Part 1

Rancho Cordova community members have experienced their fair share of joy and struggles during the past year. Over the next few days we will be re-capping the biggest news stories of the year. From a series of attempted kidnappings near Rancho Cordova schools in January to the release of the NTSB investigation of the Christmas Eve explosion that rocked a Rancho neighborhood just last week, we’ll be covering the stories that are the most relevant and important to you.

In January, a Rancho Cordova man shot a female neighbor then shot himself. The apartment complex in which the man lived was evacuated and it was later learned that the woman who was shot had threatened to report the man to Child Protective Services. January also saw the permanent appointment of  Kathleen E. Redd, as the Chief Financial Officer of GenCorp Inc. Two Rancho Cordova teen mothers with their infant children went missing at the end of January, but were found days later.

In February, the Jennifer Strange case went to trial. The young Rancho Cordova mother who participated in a radio contest died from water intoxication.  The generous students at Mitchell Middle School sponsored and organized a clothes closet for students that were in need of clothing. Quick Quack Car Wash kicked of the month by awarding their one millionth customer, Anita Ryder, the prize of one million minutes (2 years) of free car washes.

March brought spring like weather and a busy news month. Many of you might remember the story about the information recording device found at the Gold River Washington Mutual. Rancho Cordova City staff members were the recipients of local volunteerism awards and Cordova High baseball coach Guy Anderson was inducted in to the National High School Hall of Fame. If that wasn’t enough excitement for our community, the American River Grange celebrated its 135th anniversary.

In April, the community was on the lookout for the “skateboarding bandit”, a young man who robbed two area banks, then was seen fleeing the scene on a skateboard.  We also celebrated the 20th annual Kids Day in the Park with swimming, a dj, games, demonstrations and vendors. The Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce welcomed new CEO, Jane Daly, in late April, and has spent the rest of the year making the Chamber a resource for the community.

Join us this week as we take a look back at the rest of the year and welcome in 2010 .

I have coached baseball for 23 years and in Rancho Cordova the past 9 seasons. The team I coached this summer consisted of players from the Cordova Lancers High School Team after they graduated from high school. We represented Rancho Cordova in the Big League program under the jurisdiction of District 5 Little League.
We won our division and then were asked to coach the All Star team for District 5. Nine players from my team along with 7 players from other squads made the team. We won several games throughout the tournament and needed to win the last 3 in a row to represent California in the Little League World Series. We won the first 2 games and lost in the championship game to a team from San Jose.
We may have lost that last game but to see these players compete and enjoy playing together after high school was a joy to be a part of. A special thanks goes out to Gerald Guerrero who managed the team and got the team together for one last season. This was a season that I will never forget and I wish these players the best of luck in 2010.
