Settlement Reached in 2008 Christmas Eve Explosion

Pacific Gas and Electric and the victims of the Christmas eve gas explosion in Rancho Cordova have reached a confidential financial settlement. The explosion killed one man, injured his daughter, granddaughter, and others.

After reports of a gas smell in the neighborhood on December 24, 2008, PG&E workers were investigating the area on Paiute Way when the explosion occurred. Wilbert “Bill” Paana, 72, was fatally injured in the explosion. His daughter Kim and granddaughter Sunny were seriously burned.

The explosion that rocked the neighborhood was the result of an unapproved pipe being installed in Paana’s yard in a repair years prior to the explosion. A nearly year long investigation that included 75 other Sacramento area sites being dug up to ensure that the same kind of pipe was not used in those areas was released last week.

The settlement which was reached on Wednesday, December 23rd, comes almost one year after the accident.
