Rancho Cordova Installs New Mayor and Vice Mayor

Ken Cooley, a member of the Rancho Cordova City Council since the City incorporated in 2003, was sworn in as Mayor at the Rancho Cordova City Council meeting on December 21st. Robert McGarvey, also a Council Member from the City’s beginning, was sworn in as Vice Mayor.

California State Assembly Member Alyson Huber performed the swearing-in ceremony for the new Mayor and Pastor Mike Mitchum from the Rancho Cordova Neighborhood Church swore in the Vice Mayor.

The new Mayor is the California State Senate’s top advisor on insurance matters as principal consultant to the Senate Banking, Finance, and Insurance Committee. Before that, Cooley was a long-time counsel to State Farm Insurance and a top advisor on banking and insurance for the California Assembly. He has been very active in the League of California Cities and was appointed by the Governor to the California Seismic Safety Commission.

During his tenure as Mayor, Cooley says his goals are to “keep the City operating in the black, to continue to extol Rancho Cordova’s strengths as the region’s premier Fortune 500 job center, and to support our community youth as they try to understand how to succeed in uncertain economic times.” His outlook on life and his usual correspondence sign-off is “Onward and Upward”.

Cooley is serving his second term as Mayor. During his first term in 2005, the Rancho Cordova City Hall was under construction. “A major event was opening our unfinished Council Chambers to the community so all who wished could write messages to the future in indelible ink on the concrete floor of the Council Chambers,” he related.

Mayor Cooley and his wife, Sydney, have lived in Rancho Cordova for 32 years. Continuing the tradition are their two sons who live and work here. “And in early 2010, a third Cooley generation will become a City resident when the daughter of my son, Philip, and his wife is born,” he added.
Vice Mayor McGarvey is serving his second term as Vice Mayor. He served as Vice Mayor in 2005 and as Mayor in 2006.

McGarvey first came to Rancho Cordova when he was stationed at Mather in the Strategic Air Command 320th Bomb Wing from 1963 to 1965. After leaving the Air Force, he worked for PacBell for 33 years. He has a current California Emergency Teaching Credential but “I have made my elected position on the City Council a full-time job.” McGarvey and his wife, Terri, have four children and four grandchildren. All but one daughter live in Rancho Cordova.

Other members of the Rancho Cordova City Council are Dan Skoglund who just completed his first term as Mayor, Linda Budge, and David Sander.

City Council meetings are held the first and third Mondays of the month (except on Monday holidays) at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, located at 2729 Prospect Park Drive. For more information about the Council meetings, please contact the City Clerk’s office at (916) 851-8720.
