Matsui Announces Federal Funding for Improvements to Light Rail System
Light rail stations line Folsom Boulevard, making the light rail system an important asset to Rancho Cordova. The light rail will soon become more convenient to our residents as well: Rep. Doris Matsui (D-Sacramento) has announced over $38 million in federal funds will be going toward improving access to the Mather Field/Mills station and adding new stops in South Sacramento.
A statement from Matsui said the bulk of the funds will be going toward the new stops. The South Line terminus is currently located at Meadowview, and $38 million will be dedicated to extending the line to Consumnes River College. An additional $200,000 will be allocated toward making pedestrian improvements to Mather Field Road between Folsom Boulevard and Rockingham to improve access to the Mather Field/Mills light rail station.
Funding for other projects around Sacramento was also announced, including $280,000 for a student truancy program and $100,000 for a cold case review project.
Matsui said in the statement that Sacramento’s budget shortfall has made allocations toward improving public services a necessity. ““When the State of California faces a staggering budget shortfall, it is critical that federal dollars bolster our community,” she said. “From light rail, to accessible sidewalks, anti-truancy programs and law enforcement services, this funding will help the Sacramento Region continue to thrive.”
Matsui also commented on the light rail extension, saying the project is vital for Sacramento’s future. ““The extension of light rail service further into south Sacramento is a great step forward for our city,” she said. “With this public transit expansion, we have the opportunity to create hundreds of jobs, create alternative transit options for Sacramento families, reduce traffic, and improve the quality of our air by taking cars off our roads at peak hours.
“This project is just a symbol of the continued modernization of and federal investment in Sacramento, as we position ourselves as the clean-tech capital.”
