HR Business Links: A Healthy Start
Have you had your annual physical? The year 2009 is over in approximately 15 days. “I know, thanks for the reminder. Especially for us who need more time to schedule that Dr.’s appointment”. I don’t know about you, but I’ve met people that look really fit, but on the inside their health is questionable, as I’m told. We’ll leave that to the doctors to figure out, right? How’s your business health this year? Are you “fit” for compliance such as Employee Handbook updates, up to date Policies and Procedures manual, current forms (i.e. I-9′s)?
In the coming year many companies will be faced with new and revised amendments of employment laws and regulations such as the ADA Amendment Act, FMLA Amendment, Military Leave, Employee Free Choice Act, and others. Check your business pulse to see how you fair “inside and out” on administering your policies and guidelines like an Employee Handbook check up, updated philosophy of the company, EEO, overview of employee expectations, benefits, recognition programs, code of conduct/business ethics, payroll, protocols for behavior and health and safety.
Other things that should be a priority this time of year include: policies and procedures manual check-up, solicitation or distribution of literature, computer usage, email, internet, cell phones, progressive discipline and discharge. This is also a good time of year to update and communicate your company’s mission, goals and objectives to your entire team.
These are just a few honorable mentions of a very long list of items that businesses should be focusing on. So whether your company is a start-up, in a season of growth, or has reached maturity, you can use this as a guide to a healthy start in the new year. The goal is to be in better shape to stay compliant with the 2010 challenges, specifically to the employment laws and regulations that businesses will face. Here’s to your taking $tock of your Business Health!
