Rancho Cordova Puts the Unity in Community

The spirit of Christmas was alive and well at Village Green Park Sunday, November 27. It was like a step back in time to walk through the arches into this magical social event. Several local merchants, including Brookfield’s and Chili’s-who also gave out gift cards, Starbuck’s, and Baja Fresh, braved the cold to share their delicious fare with party-goers.

Peaceful pan flute filled the crisp air. The new amphitheater was packed with folks taking in the shows while nibbling on homemade treats. Clydesdales drew a hay bed laden with cozy carolers, led by locals who could really strum a guitar. A train lapped the gorgeous Christmas tree and giddy children leaped with joy when Santa arrived via a historic fire engine.

Then, just as it did a few days ago, snow made its way to Rancho Cordova one time again. For just a buck you could ride the Ferris Wheel and take in the majesty of our budding city. Many craft tables engaged the little ones, while moms and dads shared smiles and laughs over the complimentary Starbuck’s.

The whole event was free- something that is almost like a Christmas miracle in this economic downturn. The schools in danger of closing were raising donations in hopes of their own Christmas miracles. The most memorable aspect of this night was seeing neighbors come together from all walks of our city, enjoying each other, relaxing, and knowing they gave their children a spectacular Christmas memory. Absent was the cliqueness that sometimes finds its way into a size-able social event. Perhaps the census booth said it best: “Every person counts.”

It would not have been possible without the many volunteers and organizers who not only knew how to throw an awesome party, but did so while extending love and joy to everyone they met. From the man helping people off the hayride, to the seniors greeting people with gift bags, you just couldn’t leave that night without getting a bite of that good ol’ Christmas spirit.
