Smud needs to quit adding when its not needed. Smud tree service people have been cut, with jobs now done by contracted tree companies bidding for work. Meter people are going to be replaced by smart meters that read themselves. Outside electric companies come in and do the power once done by Smud workers. Smud contracts immigrant cleaning companies to wash their toilets. Talk to power line workers or at Smud headquarterrs on 65th and you will find that many can't speak English. Smud does not need new buildings either. Call Smud. They have people use for free rooms to nonprofits and groups to use to make it look like the Smud buildings are being used. Rancho seco yard and other Smud stations have acres of extra space for the poles, transformers, and wire. Why build for 10 years from now? Smud is getting smaller, not bigger, except for paper pushers.

I commend SMUD becasue they are making a move during a time that commercial real estate is depressed. It appears to me that they are thinking at least 10 years in the future and buying now at probably the lowest price on land and the lowest construction prices in decades.

I am sure that all SMUD buildings will be forced to be LEED certified in the future. Platimum certified is the best that you can do. It would be too expensive to retrofit their current buildings compared to building new building.

It is disappointing that SMUD is not locating to a State LAMBRA or Enterprise zone. Actually, it is more than disappointing, it irresponsible not to do so. With numerous sites available, it should be an absolute requirement to be in these zones. The tax advantages, tax credits and capital equiptment credits, not to mention the Federal credits are substantial. Try looking at an area south of International Drive and Zinfandel Dr. in Rancho Cordova that is within an enterprise zone and save us money. (no...I have no commercial real estate connections or interests).

Get ready for your SMUD bill to climb as the costs of this mostly-unneeded expansion hits our wallets and pocketbooks. Interesting and strange and disappointing how SMUD in the worst of times always comes up with ideas to boost their image and weasel ways to increase ratepayer rates.
