Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully announced today that Clifton Swick, 33, has been sentenced to 7 years and 8 months in state prison for the vehicular manslaughter of 87-year-old Mildred Coleman.

The incident occurred on Nov. 19, 2008 at the corner of Macready Avenue and Old Placerville Road in Rancho Cordova. Swick ran a red light and struck a vehicle that Coleman was riding in, a statement from Scully states, and Swick  tested positive for methamphetamine and alcohol. Swick pleaded no contest to a vehicular manslaughter charge as well as a driving under the influence charge, both felonies.

Deputy District Attorney Allison Dunham prosecuted the case, and Dunham is part of a prosecution team that focuses on DUI-related deaths or injuries. The team is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“Those who commit DUIs that result in death or serious injuries in Sacramento County should expect to be aggressively prosecuted and ultimately held accountable for their actions,” Dunham said in a statement.
