Timothy Brodie, then 30, was found shot in a parking lot in Rancho Cordova in December 2008, and Derrick Sam, 31, will be tried for the killing on Jan. 7, 2010 at 8:45 a.m. at the Downtown Sacramento Courthouse.

Sam was arrested in January for the killing, and detectives said at the time of arrest that they believed Sam kidnapped Brodie and shot him several times in the parking lot of an apartment complex located on Laurelhurst Drive. Brodie’s vehicle was found the next day in Carmichael, where it had been set on fire, detectives said.

Sam will be tried for five charges in addition to murder, including robbery, kidnapping, torture, arson and grand theft auto.

Sam is also currently being tried for for a non-related domestic violence charge from November 2008.  A settlement conference for that charge, as well as a trial readiness conference for the murder charge, will be held Dec. 18 at 8:30 a.m. at the Sacramento County Jail.
