H1N1 Flu Vaccine Clinic Coming to Rancho Cordova Nov. 23

Sacramento County Public Health is sponsoring a series of H1N1 flu vaccine clinics throughout the county, and First Covenant Church in Rancho Cordova will host a clinic Nov. 23 from 3 to 7 p.m.

Priority groups will be given a flu shot at the clinic, and Sacramento County said priority groups include pregnant women, healthcare workers, childcare workers caring for children under 6 months, children and young adults age 6 months to 24 years and adults age 24 to 64 years with underlying medical conditions.

The vaccine is free of charge, but due to the vaccine’s limited availability, the administrators urge anyone planning on visiting the clinic to first check their website to check the flu shot’s availability.

A local emergency was declared on Nov. 2 for the H1N1 virus in Sacramento County. As of Nov. 2, over 300 Sacramentans have been hospitalized due to H1N1 and 14 have died. Sacramento County Public Health has an informational phone line for H1N1 at (916) 875-0600.

The First Covenant Church is located at 10933 Progress Court. Other locations in Sacramento County will be holding flu clinics from Nov. 16 to Jan. 15, 2010; go to http://www.sacpublichealth.net/h1n1-clinic-schedule/ to find more clinics in the area.

  1. What might be the risks of this vaccine be as compared to that of the seaonal flu? Are any of the stabilizing or preservatives used with the H1N1 different; and if so, what are their possible side effects? Are all the virus “split” and or domant/dead in this serum? Is this going to require a second injection? How long to become effective against the H1N1 flu?
    Thank you for your answers.
