Each year, Cordova Community Food Locker distributes Thanksgiving dinner to families in need, in addition to emergency food give-outs throughout the year. The Cordova Community Food Locker was founded in 1987, and has been helping the less fortunate ever since. As the economy worsens, the food locker relies heavily upon the support of other local churches, the Sacramento Food Bank, and California Emergency Food Link.

This year, the Thanksgiving distribution will be held on Monday, November 23rd at St. John Vianney Parish, 10497 Coloma Road in Rancho Cordova. The distribution begins at 8:30 a.m., and is on a first come, first served basis.

The food locker’s efforts are definitely needed, as the numbers of hungry families and individuals within the community continue to increase. The food locker is open once a month for food distribution. If interested in either picking up food or volunteering your time, please call the food locker for details. Families can expect to recieve one to three days worth of food.  Food is also given out on an individual basis through out the month.  Holiday celebrations that would simply not be had otherwise, are made possible for the needy by distributions such as those from the Cordova Community Food Locker.

For many families, a holiday banquet may not be possible with out the distribution that the food locker hosts. According to Angela a spokesperson for the Cordova Community Food Locker, some of the most needed items this time of year are canned goods, turkeys, baby food, and diapers. If you would like to help make a Happy Thanksgiving for those who are less fortunate in Rancho Cordova by donating or volunteering for the giveaway, please call the Food Locker office at (916) 364-8973.
