Rancho Cordova Chamber Hosts State Senator Dave Cox for Government Breakfast Series

The Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce is hosting a new series that features governmental leaders. the Government Breakfast Series gives the local community a chance to talk with and ask questions of our local leaders. In a fairly small group setting, the elected official has the opportunity to take questions and spend a part of the morning discussing the issues that are important to you.

On Tuesday, November 1oth, State Senator Dave Coxtook time out of his schedule to speak to the Chamber of Commerce. The first item on his agenda was a discussion of the recently passed water bond bill. This was not a party line vote, Cox said, the vote was purely geographical; Northern California against Southern California. He also believes that in addition to this decision robbing water from Northern California, the $11.1 billion bill contains too much pork spending. Ultimately, the people of California will decide the fate of the bill next year. Cox says he’s not worried,  that voters will make the right decision.

After a small address about the state budget and taxes, Cox began taking questions. A concerned parent of a student at a local school slated to close asked about the $500 million the state has reserved for the purchase of new textbooks. “Why close schools and save a couple hundred thousand dollars, when the purchase of new textbooks could be postponed for a couple years?”. Cox agreed. That decision is in the hands of superintendents state wide who would have to all agree to use the funding for a purpose besides that of purchasing textbooks. “There’s lots of things where I’d want to let the people choose how to spend their money”, Cox told the group.

Another topic many people have questions about is the newest version of the health care reform bill. With countless details still being decided, many are sure of their stance, including Cox. “If we get this program going, we won’t be able to do what we set out to do… You’re just going to have more expenses than you do revenue”.

As a proud member of the Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce, State Senator Dave Cox has been representing the First Senate District, including the counties of Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Lassen, Modoc, Mono, Plumas and Sierra, as well as portions of Nevada, Placer and Sacramento County.

Join the Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce on December 10th from 7:30 to 9:00 for the next Government Breakfast Series featuring Alyson Huber.
