Rancho Cordova Veterans Day Program Focuses on Women
“A Salute to Women in the Military” is the theme of the 4th annual Veterans Day Celebration in Rancho Cordova on Wednesday, November 11th, at 10 a.m. in the Veterans Memorial Plaza at the Sacramento VA Medical Center, 10535 Hospital Way in Mather.
Sponsored by the City of Rancho Cordova and the Department of Veterans Affairs Northern California Health Care System, the ceremony will pay tribute to all U.S. military veterans but the program will focus on women who have served in the U.S. military.
A highlight of the program will be special recognition of four Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) who are World War II-era veterans, by Congressman Dan Lungren, who co-sponsored legislation to award the Congressional Gold Medal to deserving WASP.
Keynote speakers will be Barbara Ward, Women and Minority Veterans Affairs Deputy Secretary; Brigadier General Mary Kight, Assistant Adjutant General for the California National Guard; and Major Mirtha Villareal from the California National Guard.
Special guests will be California State Assemblywoman Alyson Huber and Rancho Cordova City Council Members Linda Budge and Robert McGarvey.
Musical entertainment will be provided by the Cordova High School Chamber Choir and Buglers from the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s Concert Band. Sarah McGarvey of Rancho Cordova will sing the national anthem.
