The Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality District’s program “Check Before You Burn” began for another winter season on November 1st. This program limits the days that people are allowed to burn wood in fireplaces, stoves, or fire pits.
It’s fairly simple to check if it is a burn day. Residents may call 877-662-8765 or check out the Air Quality Management Districts website. There are four stages to the program, with various burning limitations; all burning prohibited, no burn unless exempt, burning discouraged, and legal to burn.
First time violators burning on prohibited burning days will have to pay a $50 fine or will have to take a wood smoke awareness course.
The “Check Before You Burn” program is in effect in Rancho Cordova and the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County until February 28th and is designed to keep further particulate matter out of the air on days that the air quality is deemed unhealthy.
