Delta Counties Coalition Backs Huber’s Delta Bill
The Delta Counties Coalition, comprised of San Joaquin, Sacramento, Contra Costa, Yolo and Solano counties, announced today that they will be supporting Assembly Member Alyson Huber (D- El Dorado Hills) in her efforts to preserve the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta’s water supply and water quality.
The bill was introduced to California legislature on Thursday, and if enacted, will prohibit the construction of a canal that diverts water to a location south of the Delta unless authorized by state legislature. Additionally, the bill would require that the Legislative Accountibility Office analyze any canal proposal’s economic feasability, and if a canal proposal is approved, it must not diminish the water supplies, water rights and water quality for users of the Delta watershed.
“It is important that we maintain legislative oversight of large-scale projects and not delegate that authority to unelected bureaucrats,” Huber said in a statement. “I am very concerned that the current water policy bill provides a clear path to building a canal and this ensures we get answers to some very important questions, and give the Delta a voice in the process.”
The Delta Counties Coalition said Huber’s bill deserves the coalition’s support. “The DCC has expressed great concerns regarding approval, cost, protection of water rights and the negative economic impacts of any conveyance system intended to divert water from the Sacramento River,” a letter from the coalition to Huber said. “Your measure would address these core concerns of the DCC.”
Huber’s bill is one of several going through legislature aimed at controlling the depletion of the Delta; Senate President Pro-Tem Darrell Steinberg also announced an expansive bill aimed at conservation of the area last week.
