Plans to extend Zinfandel Drive to Douglas Road were sidelined on Tuesday by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, but the discussion and approval has been tentavely rescheduled for December 1.

The project will include a two-lane roadway from Douglas Road to Zinfandel Drive/Eagles Nest Road and a widening of roadway approaches on Douglas Road. Documents submitted by the Sacramento County Department of Transportation say the project’s aim is to relieve congestion on Sunrise Boulevard and help improve the flow of traffic in Rancho Cordova.

The board was scheduled to approve an environmental document, as well as the project itself, on Tuesday, but the agenda item was continued until December 1. The project’s approval depends on whether the board approves the Mitigated Negative Declaration environmental document that outlines the steps Sacramento County will take to ensure the environment will not be overly impacted by the project. Steps include ensuring there will be no net loss of waters in the area, as well as a payment to Swainson’s Hawk Impact Mitigation Fund for the loss of the bird’s habitat.

The Department of Transportation originally estimated that bidding on the project would begin in December with a completion date of summer 2011. The estimated $2.9 million price tag for the project will be funded entirely by the Mather Public Facilities Fund.
