Folsom Lake College Receives $285,000 National Science Foundation Grant

Folsom Lake College has received a coveted $285,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support the development of Computational Thinking (CT) elements and strategies that can be used throughout community college curriculum – potentially as a model for nationwide implementation. This is the second NSF grant the college has received.

This Computer and Information Science Education Path (CPATH) award will fund development of several pilot projects for teaching CT in a variety of academic disciplines and in all educational segments. CT is a set of skills developed in computer science and related disciplines, but applicable to a variety of real-world problem-solving tasks and projects associated with any academic discipline or program.

The partnership of Folsom Lake College with CSU Sacramento, Intel, the City of Folsom, M-PICT San Francisco, and others was developed over the last two years with another NSF grant. The steering committee and work groups will meet approximately 30 times over the next three years, showing the dedication of those involved with the project.

“This grant is a major development for higher education in our region,” said Folsom Lake College President Dr. Thelma Scott-Skillman. “Folsom Lake College looks forward to working together with our partners on this crucial project.”
