All-America City Quilt Tour Headed to Rancho Cordova

The 2009 All-America City quilt, heading to California as part of a national tour, will be displayed at Rancho Cordova City Hall October 20-27 in recognition of the city’s strong showing in the competition. Rancho Cordova was one of 29 finalists at the 2009 All-America City Awards, hosted by the National Civic League and held in Tampa, FL in June.
A special showing is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, October 22nd at Rancho Cordova City Hall. Admission is free of charge and refreshments will be served.

Finalist cities were asked to submit a handmade quilt square that was representative of their city. The square was designed and produced by Cordova High School students Nicole Rodgers, Brianna Gibson, Yenitza Lugo, Iliana Teran, and Cathen Bell, under the guidance of Eunice Reyes, coordinator of the CHS Student Union. The quilt square features a child bicycling along the American River Parkway Bike Trail, with an airplane soaring overhead and buildings in the distance. A light rail train runs along a track embroidered along the border. The square is stitched with the words: “Rancho Cordova — A place to grow and thrive” and “City life. Reinvented.

Members of the Rancho Cordova 2009 delegation will be on hand to answer questions and seek input from residents on what a 2010 entry into the prestigious competition might include.

The Rancho Cordova entry for 2009 focused on police-community partnerships. The entry placed a spotlight on the city’s unique “Shared Command Management” model for the Rancho Cordova Police Department, citizen-city efforts to slow traffic on Rancho Cordova streets, and the formation of the Rancho Cordova Police Activities League (PAL) – a trio of projects that vaulted Rancho Cordova into the national civic spotlight.

Rancho Cordova was named a finalist from among 151 applications for the prestigious award earlier this year. A citizen delegation led by the Cordova Community Council including a representative group of citizens and public servants made the trip to Tampa to pursue the award, which honors local achievement through citizen action. The presentation featured a trio of Cordova High School students who sang the presentation’s “Stand by Me” theme.
