SOCKS Honors National Feral Cat Day

Alley Cat Allies, the national advocate for stray and feral cats, designated October 16 as National Feral Cat Day in 2001. Many organizations across the country now advocate for feral cats, including The Humane Society of the United States, the nation’s largest animal protection organization. The purpose of NFCD to raise awareness and educate communities about outdoor cats, feral cat colonies, and the importance of accessible, affordable spay and neuter services. It is a day for us to think about the outdoor cats we see ducking behind the supermarket or sunning in our backyards. Who are these cats, and how did they get here?

Feral cats exist in every community with little human contact. Except for kittens who can be socialized, feral cats are not suitable as pets. Feral cats and their offspring are victims of abandonment, accidental loss, and failure by owners to spay and neuter their pets. Thanks to dedicated caretakers who spend their own money to spay and neuter and care for the cats through a strategy call Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), feral cats no longer reproduce and nuisance behaviors are reduced or eliminated.

TNR is the most effective way to reduce the feral cat overpopulation. With TNR, cats are humanely trapped, brought to a veterinarian for evaluation, spaying or neutering, vaccinating, and ear tipping. Ear tipping is the universal sign of a feral cat who has been spayed or neutered.

For more information on Trap-Neuter-Return, feral cats, the importance of spay and neuter for all cats, to VOLUNTEER, or make a donation, please visit our website: www.rcsocks.org. Save Our Cats & Kittens-Sensibly (SOCKS) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to managing feral cats through TNR. SOCKS brings awareness about feral cats, TNR, and spay and neuter, and works with like-minded individuals to help feral cats in Rancho Cordova.
