America, especially California, is known for bountiful resources, particularly when it comes to food production, so the issue of hunger may not be at the forefront of our minds. Statistics show, however, that almost one in every eight Americans struggles with hunger on a regular basis.
That number translates into millions of Americans dealing with hunger every day, unable to make ends meet, going without meals to stretch meager resources in this difficult economy. We may or may not be aware of it, but each of us is probably in contact with at least a few people affected by hunger.
Feeding America, formerly known as America’s Second Harvest, is the leading domestic hunger-relief charity in the nation. It well known for its network of over 200 food banks throughout the US, securing and distributing over 2 billion pounds of donated food annually to more than 25 million low-income people in America, including over 9 million children and about 3 million seniors.
The network supports local charitable agencies, about 63,000 of them nationwide, and the greater than 70,000 programs within, which include after school programs for children, soup kitchens, pantries, and emergency shelters.
September is National Hunger Action Month, and this year Feeding America has teamed up with local food banks, The Cheesecake Factory, and Macy’s to help stamp out hunger nationally by launching the “Drive Out Hunger Tour,” and the community-focused “Come Together” project with the goals of securing 100,000 cans of donated food, and raising 10 million meals to distribute to hungry Americans.
These are excellent campaigns, because they provide a variety of easy ways for any person to take personal action in this cause. You can check out how it works by visiting The Cheesecake Factory website or Macys’ website.
Other great ways to get involved in helping end the struggle with hunger in your community is by visiting your local food bank and volunteering or donating. They are always in need and appreciative of your help. More information about local food bank locations, hunger, Feeding America, and National Hunger Action Month efforts can be found by visiting the Feeding America website.
