Help Rancho Go Green: Learn How Your Business Can Achieve LEED Certification

Several businesses and building projects in Rancho Cordova are going green — and your business can too.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program is administered by the U.S. Green Building Council, a non-profit organization that aims to promote energy efficient building projects across the nation. Projects must meet rigorous standards in design, water efficiency, energy efficiency and other criteria to achieve the coveted certification.

Businesses can also achieve LEED certification even if they are located in existing buildings that are not currently green. In addition to certification for existing buildings and building projects, the U.S. Green Building Council also offers certification for retail interiors as incentive for those who want to go green but don’t have control of the entire building they’re located in.

Rancho Cordova City Hall, Vision Service Plan, and the Franchise Tax Board buildings have all achieved LEED “green building” certification, and twice as many buildings in the area are registered to get the same certification.

The process to achieve LEED certification might seem complicated, but the Northern California chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council offers workshops to help interested business owners get started on the process. The next workshop for existing buildings will be held on Sept. 30 at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco; details for the event can be found here.

The Northern California chapter will also be holding the third annual Green Building Super Heroes awards gala on Oct. 30 at the California Academy of Sciences building in San Francisco. Tickets are open for the public to purchase and full-time students will receive a discounted ticket price.
