Racers Dive in to the Mather Mud Run
A long obstacle course spanning Hagan Park was the centerpiece of the 10th Annual Mather Mud Run Saturday morning. Racers jumped over hurdles, navigated through tires and dove through mud to win positions in their categories.
The event was held by Basic Training, a bootcamp-style fitness program, and featured exhibits from first responders such as the Sacramento County Sheriff and all branches of the military. The U.S. Air Force flew over the event during the National Anthem and an Air Force band played live music while racers made their way around the course.
Racers came out in droves, and though they were tired and muddy after the race, most beamed with pride that they had taken part.
Racer Stacey Droll said her parents were in the Air Force and she took part in the event as a way to support them.
“This was so much fun,” Droll said. “I signed up for two but I did three laps because I just wanted to go through the mud again.”
The Mather Mud Run was the official kickoff event for Air Force Week. Air Force Week will finish with the Capital Air Show on Sept. 12 and 13 at Mather Airport.
Race results for the 5-mile run can be found on Basic Training’s website.

I did this event several years ago when it was held at Mather Regional Park. It was so much fun and I still have a picture of me running hanging in my office.
