FCUSD Student Homelessness Up in 2009

Project 680, a grassroots community organization in Rancho Cordova, announced on Friday that the Folsom Cordova Unified School District now has 783 documented homeless students in their enrollment, an increase of 103 from 2008. The number was provided to the organization by the district’s Liaison for Homeless Services.

“Let’s be honest, this is not great news,” Project 680 Organizer Ryan Lundquist said on the organization’s website. “All we can do is blaze forward with vision and persist in our efforts to support and empower local homeless students.”

Project 680 is a unique program that relies on the community’s efforts to help homeless students in the area. The organization will accept monetary donations, but also asks for practical ideas and hands-on ways to help the students directly.

The organization recently completed an underwear drive for homeless students. Their goal was to collect 680 pairs of underwear; their final tally was 3,198 pairs in July.

Project 680 will be holding a meeting in mid-to-late September to prepare for the 2009-2010 school year. In the meantime, those interested in becoming involved in the effort can learn more from a Project 680 introductory video or contact Ryan Lundquist here for more information.

The organization’s name will not be changing its name due to the rising figure.

“Our courage will not be deflated and we will not be deterred in our quest,” Lundquist said. “Bottom line.”

  2. Thank you for drawing attention to a very important local issue. Let’s consider as a community how we might respond. Thank you also to all the Rancho Cordova Post readers who have been involved with the efforts of Project 680 in very practical ways. Project 680 is a volunteer effort and together as residents we are making a difference.

We can never solve complex problems in our community without working together.
