National Night Out in Anatolia - The Rancho Cordova Post

Over 100 neighbors attended the Verona Neighborhood Watch Group in Anatolia, Rancho Cordova. It was the first National Night Out event for this neighborhood since the Verona Neighborhood Watch Group was established in February 2009. The Verona Neighborhood Watch Group is the largest group within the greater Anatolia community. Pizza, Indian and Korean dishes to hotdogs, meatballs, and desserts were among the delicious potluck contribution that night.

Jen Pevny, the watch coordinator, has extended special thanks this week to the Sacramento Sherriff’s Dept and the Rancho Cordova Police Department. Chief Reuben Meeks, Officer Debbie Lissy and three other police officers and detectives attended, as well as a Sacramento Metro Fire’s Community Emergency Response Team member who spread the word on fire safety.

Jen Pevny, who also lives in Anatolia, was instrumental in the formation of the Verona Neighborhood Watch Group at Anatolia, which consists of over sixty homes. Jen worked tirelessly for several weeks knocking on doors and sending out flyers rallying for contact information and participation. Now the Watch Group has almost 100% participation. The group consists of the watch coordinator and six assigned block captains. Everyday functions involve daily email communication within the group, welcoming new neighbors, ensuring that any incidents take place are immediately reported to 911, keeping track of persons living in each house, and disseminating information, activities and events.

With the limited funding of our local Police and Sherriff’s agencies, the neighborhood watch program adds eyes and ears to the neighborhood and RCPD. It’s a way to contribute to the community and help improve the safety and security of our neighbors.

In a recent email, Rancho Cordova City Councilman Robert McGarvey praised the Watch Group, “It is nice to hear about such conscientious people in ‘Anatolia-Verona’, and the time they are willing to put in to their neighborhoods to bring the people together. Newer neighborhoods need concerned citizens like the Pevny’s to get the ball going, and as Matt said, that’s a great story. It is the people who make Rancho Cordova such a great place to live”.

Neighborhood watch groups are essential part of a community.

“Resident”, are you involved in Neighborhood Watch on your street? If not, why not?
