Want to Know the Future of Rancho Cordova, Just Look at Our Youth

There is an incredible amount of data available from public sources on everything from births to death rates, employment, homelessness, income, age, ethnicity and much more. Not often do we think about or take the time to research this data about our community.

There is a well know axiom in information technology circles that says data leads to information, information to knowledge, and knowledge to wisdom. Wisdom leads us to better business decisions. Wisdom also leads us to better civic decisions and smarter life choices.

With this in mind we thought it might be interesting to our readers to share a little data about Rancho Cordova. For this article we only focused on birth profiles for 1998 and 2008 in the 95670 zip code which encompasses most of Rancho Cordova and includes Gold River.

The data is provided by the California Center for Public Health Center for Health Statistics. If you would like to find similar data you can easily search for “statistics by zip code” or something similar in your favorite search engine. Now for the data you’ve been eagerly waiting for, but first some interesting findings.

  • The total of mothers in the white race/ethnic profile has declined by 122 in absolute numbers and 20 points as a percentage from 1998 to 2008.
  • The total of mothers in the hispanic race/ethnic profile increased by 115 in absolute numbers and 12.5 points as a percentage from 1998 to 2008.
  • Combined, the mothers identifying themselves as Southeast Asian, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander and two plus race/ethnic profiles make up the bulk of the 10.7 point increase of non-white mothers in the birthing profile since 1998.
  • Mothers identify themselves as Black or Filipino essentially remained the same in 2008 as in 1998.
  • The age of mothers in the birth profile has increased in the 20-29 range by 4.8 points at the same time mothers in the upper and lower age brackets as a percentage have decreased by .5 and 2.3 points respectively.

Note: In the 1998 Birth Profile Asian and Hawaiian/Pacific Islander were combined and Southeast Asian was not counted nor mothers with two plus races.

  1. Sad to say, but many if not most young Rancho Cordovans find no future for themselves in their home city. At least for the preceding generation, their lives moved on either to the service or places like San Diego, Elk Grove, Folsom, El Dorado Hills, Rocklin.
