VSP Study Shows Children in Need of Eye Care

VSP, a Rancho Cordova based vision insurance company, and Prevent Blindness America announced the results of a study today that nearly one in five children aged 12-17 has trouble seeing chalkboards and whiteboards at school.

The study involved 1,499 adults in May 2009 and also found that nearly one in four children report headaches while at school. Approximately 45 percent of children in that age group report wearing prescription eyewear, which reinforces the need for parents to have their children’s vision checked annually, the study said.

“The survey provides a clear example of why regular eye exams are so important as children progress in school.” said Gary Brooks, VSP Vision Care President. “Most parents probably assume once a prescription is given, there isn’t a need for further follow up. However, the survey results reinforce the need for regular eye exams as kids’ eyes continue to change and adapt.”

The study also found that nearly two-thirds of children under six have never had an eye exam and the prevalence of eye conditions increases with age.

VSP has instituted a Sight for Students program that provides eye care to children whose family cannot provide care for them. The program has referred over 500,000 children to VSP doctors since its inception in 1997.
