Mills Wins Shoe Drive Competition, Mitchell Principal Makes Lunchtime Walk of Shame

Recently, Mills Middle School and Mitchell Middle School competed against each other for our 2nd annual Nike shoe drive. Mills and Mitchell Middle Schools had only one week to gather up as many shoes as possible! The goal of the shoe drive was to teach students the importance of recycling. All of the shoes that were still in good condition were shipped to needy kids around the world. All the other shoes were ground up and turned into track, tennis, and basketball courts.

In order to raise the level of competition on both campuses, Principal Maroon and Principal Berns decided to make a side bet; the bet was that the principal from the losing school had to go to the other school during lunch decked out in the winning school’s colors!

When all the shoes had been gathered and counted, Mills Middle School had gathered 2,500 shoes while Mitchell Middle School only gathered 700, thus declaring Mills the winner of the shoe drive competition. Mr. Berns was a true sportsman as he adorned himself in Mills green and gold attire, painted his entire head green and paraded through the campus to take the humiliation of losing. The competitions are hopefully the first of many to revive the great history the two schools have with each other.
