Folsom Cordova Community Partnership To Hold Summer Youth Employment Program

The Folsom Cordova Community Partnership has received funding from the Sacramento Employment and Training Agency (SETA) through the Obama Reinvestment Act to run a Summer Youth Employment Program in the cities of Rancho Cordova and Folsom. This program, entitled the Summer of Service, will place 80 youth ages 16-21, from low-income families in paid employment and community service position from June 15-August 31, 2009.

Each youth participant will complete a pre-employment academy to develop work readiness skills before being placed at a work or community service location. All youth will earn $8 per hour for a maximum of 30 hours per week which amounts to $207,000 being returned to the local economy.

The Partnership is seeking both youth and employers from the private, public and nonprofit sectors to act as “Host Sites” for this exciting program. Youth participants need to come from low-income families or be low-income themselves and be emancipated. In addition, they need to meet one of the following criteria: be deficient academically, be a school dropout, be homeless, be a runaway, be a foster child, be pregnant or parenting, be a former offender, require additional assistance to complete an educational program, or to secure and hold employment.

The Partnership will be holding a drop-in Job Fair on Monday, June 1, 2009 at the Era A Loveless Power Center located at 10455 Investment Circle in Rancho Cordova from 4-6PM for interested youth applicants. Live entertainment and food fresh from the grill will be provided. Interested applicants need to bring proof of family income, their social security card or birth certificate, a valid driver’s license or CA identification card, a permanent resident card, us passport or certificate of naturalization, proof of selective service registration [if a male aged 17 ½ or older] and proof of service discharge if applicant is a veteran.

In addition, all youth ages 16 & 17 must have a parent or guardian present to sign the job application. All questions regarding youth participation should be directed to Katie Willse, Director of Youth Services at 361-8684.

Host Sites are responsible for providing orientation, job training, supervision and mentorship for participating youth. If you are interested in becoming a Host Site, please contact Paul Shane, Executive Director at 361-8684 Ext 227. We will also be performing short-term community service projects throughout the summer. Please contact Paul Shane today if you would like your community service project included in the Summer of Service project.
