Garbeau’s Dinner Theatre to Close by End of May

Garbeau’s Dinner Theatre will be closing on May 31, according to a press release issued on April 3 by owners Andrea Castel and Mark Ferreira.

Garbeau’s, an upscale restaurant featuring live theatre performances, is located on Folsom Boulevard near Hazel Avenue. The theatre launched a campaign in February to raise $100,000 by March 16 in order to save their business from closure.

Garbeau’s landlord had set the March 16 deadline after the theatre fell behind on its rent over the preceding year. Due to the attention of the local media, Garbeau’s was able to raise the money by the deadline with the hopes of entering in to negotiations for rent relief.

The theatre’s landlord refused to negotiate a lower rent for the struggling theater and required them to pay $1,000  more  in rent per-month, starting this month, according to the press release.

As a result of the failed negotiations, Castel and Ferreira decided that they could not afford to remain open past May. The owners said in their release that their landlord already has a comedy club lined up for tenancy in their space.

“Our hearts have been broken,” the owners said in their press release, but said that their supporters “have mended them.”

In a message to members of the Facebook group “Save Garbeau’s!,” Andrea Castel thanked their supporters  for their help and said that they would like to have a “huge send-off” before they close.

“We’re having our customers and visitors sign our walls as a way to leave a lasting presence in the building,” Castel said in the message. “We’ll have to paint the walls, but at least we’ll know what’s underneath!”

The theatre’s current performance, “There’s a Little Bit of Broadway in Everyone,” will be playing on Friday and Saturday evenings and as a Sunday matinee until their closure on May 31. Reservations can be made by calling (916) 985-6361.
