Cordova High Students Attend Sacramento Regional Science Bowl

The 19th Annual Sacramento Regional Science Bowl is coming to Folsom and there will be two teams representing Cordova High. High school students from Northern California will match wits for the 19th consecutive year at the Sacramento Regional Science Bowl competition Saturday, Feb. 28, at Vista del Lago High School, 1970 Broadstone Parkway in Folsom.

The students from Cordova High School attending the Science Bowl include, Alex Benbrook, Raymond Hunt, Jacques Lowe, and Brenda Yang on Team A. Andrey Shiboyan, Jakob Mironynk, Byron Patton, Yang-Ming Ping and coach Glenn Reagan will make up Team B.

Sponsored by the Western Area Power Administration, Aerojet, the California Independent System Operator, the Northern California Power Agency, Roseville Electric and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, the all-day competition is similar in format to the network-hosted General Electric Company’s College Bowl of the mid 1960s. Thirty teams from 17 high schools will be vying for top honors in the double elimination, round-robin competition as they answer “toss up” and “bonus” questions in the biological and physical sciences, computer science and math.

The winning team will earn an all-expense paid trip to the Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl Competition in Washington, D.C., April 30 through May 5, 2009. Last year’s regional winner was from Mira Loma High School in Sacramento.

DOE first launched the competition in 1991, and Western, a DOE agency, sponsors the regional event. Details on the Sacramento Regional are on Western’s Web site More information can also be found on the National Science Bowl Web site.

The student teams are expected to begin checking in around 8 a.m., and the first round is tentatively scheduled to “kick-off” at 9 a.m.

Western hosts regional Science Bowl competitions in Arizona, California, Colorado, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.
