Community Brings Garden Back to Mills

Recently, Mills Middle School finished the renovation of their campus garden.  The garden, which dates back to the 70’s, now has over 40 grow boxes, several hundred feet of drip systems, and various ground cover.  The Rancho Cordova Rotary group took on the garden project 2 years ago.

With the help of local volunteers and educators, including FCUSD Superintendent Pat Godwin, the garden is now ready to use.  Joyce Martin, a science teacher at Mills, is looking forward to the new space.  For over 20 years, Mrs. Martin has had her 7th graders grow both fall and spring crops.  Her science classes have gained valuable first-hand life experience because of the projects.

Mill’s teacher Scott Meyer commented, “I remember when I first started working at Mills and students would proudly bring me a bag full of fresh grown vegetables that they just harvested from our school garden.  It was very cool watching the students’ hard work pay off!”

Both students and staff are excited to have the garden in top shape and are anxious for the first harvest!

I have a neighbor who says he learned to grow tomatoes from his time at Mills. He is 50+ years old. It's nice to see this program re-emerge.

I love Ms. Martin! She was my science teacher in 7th grade, 3 years ago. We never had the garden while it was functioning but I'm part of Interact (Jr. Rotary) and got to help with the project too. I remember clearing out all of the rubbish and lining the boxes and everything. It was loads of fun!
