The first we heard about this was a robo-call from Mitchell School's principal around noon today. I commend the school for being pro-active in alerting the parents.

That's fantastic that the school is being so proactive. I agree that a lot of the preparation for situations like these begin in the home. I must say that I am awfully proud of both of these boys for making the smart decision to run away and tell someone immediately.

A letter was sent home with Mitchell students on Tuesday. Teachers discussed the letter with students in their sixth period classes. Students were given a refresher lecture on street safety. The letter encourages parents to talk to their children about safety measures tailored to their own situations – safe houses and neighbors who can be turned to for help, walking with a friend, meeting kids at the bus stop, etc.

What precations have PARENTS taken to be sure their children know to stay away from any stranger claiming to need help finding a lost dog? Parents are the first and most important line of defense.
