Attempted Kidnapper Sought in Rancho Cordova

Rancho Cordova police report that officers are looking for a man who attempted to kidnap two 11-year-old boys Monday in two separate incidents.

Police believe the same person is behind the two attempts. The first incident was reported at 2:24 p.m. by a boy walking on Mapola Way near Williamson Elementary School, says a press release from the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department.  The boy said he saw a black semi-automatic pistol in the man’s car. He ran to Wiliamson Elementary to get away from the suspect and told the staff.

Officers responded again at 2:42 p.m. to another incident that involved a boy walking near Cordova Lane Elementary School on Cordova Lane, police said. The second boy reported that the man tried to grab him through the window of the car, police said. He then ran home and told his mother, who then called the police.

In both cases, a man drove up to the boys and asked them to help find his lost dog.

Officers were unable to locate the man or the vehicle . The attempted kidnapper is described as a Latino man in his 30s. He had black hair, a mole on the left side of his face and he was unshaven with a goatee, authorities said. The vehicle the man was driving was described as a mid-sized four-door sedan that was either black or dark green in color.

The two boys are scheduled to meet with a sketch artist Tuesday.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s department at (916) 874-5115 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.

What precations have PARENTS taken to be sure their children know to stay away from any stranger claiming to need help finding a lost dog? Parents are the first and most important line of defense.

A letter was sent home with Mitchell students on Tuesday. Teachers discussed the letter with students in their sixth period classes. Students were given a refresher lecture on street safety. The letter encourages parents to talk to their children about safety measures tailored to their own situations – safe houses and neighbors who can be turned to for help, walking with a friend, meeting kids at the bus stop, etc.

  5. That's fantastic that the school is being so proactive. I agree that a lot of the preparation for situations like these begin in the home. I must say that I am awfully proud of both of these boys for making the smart decision to run away and tell someone immediately.

The first we heard about this was a robo-call from Mitchell School's principal around noon today. I commend the school for being pro-active in alerting the parents.
