Share your Story with Rancho

When I first met with Geoff Sakala, the creator and Managing Editor of the Post, I thought he had a pretty good idea going with his online-only, Rancho Cordova news source. I mean, I check the weather online. I communicate with people online. I shop online. In fact, I spend a great deal of time in our “home office”.

And, if this guy is ready and willing to pay me for writing and reporting news in a city I’m growing to love…then who am I to say an online news source can’t be successful. After a brief stint (read 4.25 days) working as a receptionist for my home towns’ local newspaper, I had thought that perhaps journalism wasn’t for me. I was wrong. Very wrong.

Sometimes I think people’s passions are odd. The professor I had in college that ran marathons, for fun. Even in the summer. My mother who makes quilts in her spare time and does quite an impressive job. Cutting out little bits of cloth to piece and then sew together in meticulous patterns is not my idea of an exciting weekend. I would find it infuriating.

I have a friend who enjoys going to new restaurants. Finding new restaurants to explore is not just a hobby, it’s a lifestyle. But who am I to judge? I think bargain hunting is a skill, and I am proud to say I’ve saved my husband thousands of dollars through my dedicated shopping excursions over the years. We all add to the fabric of our community.

This is where you come in. If you have a passion, be it sports, crafts, or critiquing restaurants, Rancho Cordova would like to hear your voice. The RC Post is at a point where we are poised for growth and looking for new writers. I find this to be terribly exciting, not only from my perspective as the Editor, but also because I love to see members of the community make an investment in the place they live, work and play.

Please do not be shy. If you have a stellar idea for a new column you’d like to see, or you’d like to write a column yourself, let me know. You don’t have to have professional writing experience, nor do you have to commit all of your spare time. You do have to have the desire to share your passion with others in your community, though. Who knows, it might be one of the best decisions you’ve ever made. It was for me.

How about a military column? We have Guardsmen stationed from Rancho deployed over seas as well as other military operations that go on every day.

Thanks for the suggestion. In fact we are covering the National Guardsmen and Reserve troops deployed in Afghanistan during this year. Be sure to read about the Medivac units who are supporting soldiers injured in battle. There is a great article named Angels Among Them written by a volunterer names GIna Lenzi. Be sure to check it out and stay tuned for more.
