PG&E Denies Any Responsibility in Paiute Way Explosion

On Thursday, January 8, a little over two weeks since the fatal explosion in Rancho Cordova, Pacific Gas and Electric Company said that its workers followed strict policy in investigating and handling  the gas leak that was the cause. A company spokesman said PG&E  will be releasing a 1,000-page document that details its emergency policies.

“When our personnel arrive, they’re to evacuate a building if gas is detected inside the building or if gas is detected immediately adjacent to an outside wall of the building,” said PG&E spokesman David Eisenhauer. Eisenhauer said the company cannot comment on the National Transportation Safety Board investigation. That investigations is said to take anywhere from 6 months to a year to complete. “We see nothing to indicate that our people responding to the scene of this incident violated those procedures or policies,” he said.

Bill Paana was killed in the explosion and his daughter and granddaughter are still in the hospital recovering from their injuries. Three other people were treated for less severe injuries. Two neighboring homes were heavily damaged. The emotional damages suffered by area residents are countless.

Residents in the area of the blast said they do not accept PG&E’s claim. “To me, adjacent is between my front door and the sidewalk. I don’t know what adjacent is – two inches or three inches to them. But I guess the word has some latitude,” said Patrick Grant, who lives two doors from the home that was destroyed.

Neighbor Beverly Shah said she is  disappointed PG&E did not evacuate the neighborhood. “At first, we were told that they were going to evacuate up to ten houses away, which would have included mine and that never occurred,” she said.
